Hi guys. Been a while since I've done a WIP thread. Been tinkering with stuff...just nothing to important.

Well a little while back I decided to look for an item used as a prop that everyone and there cousin didn't seem to be looking for. I think I found it. As a kid in the 70's I of course was a Star Wars freak. But I was...and still am a big fan of Buck Rogers.

Everybody knows the Starfighter helmet...well I decided to look for a much lesser known helmet from the series. And here it is.








It took a bit of searching but I found what I was looking for.









The cool thing is...this helmet is in great shape. A little polishing of the visor and some paint and its ready to display.

Not sure if anyones done one of these or not. But I think it will be a pretty cool piece to have in my collection.

Ok..quick update. I got the thing torn down and cleaned. Masked the entire interior of the lid and deglossed the plastic.

I'm painting the underside of the visors and the locations on the helmet that they cover.







You'll have to excuse the mess in my little shop. I got sh*t everywhere. I did a bit of cleanup and polish on the visor shield as well. Some pretty deep scratches on the thing so I doubt it will turn out perfect. Maybe someday I'll stumble upon a brand new one...yeah...right.

Thanks SithLord. Once I fixated on this helmet I just had to figure out what it was. The Starfighter helmets were modded Bell motorcycle helmets...as were most of the helmets used in the show. With the exeption of one that I noticed. And I believe it to be a Simpson "Bandit" helmet.

Given the budget of the show I figured something as obscure a prop as this would most likely be a found item maybe just painted to suit there needs. These helmets are in reality firefighter helmets. Based on a Bell motorcycle half helmet.

I saw them in another episode painted silver as well.

Here is another small update. Doing a bit of the assembly and painting on the helmet. Please excuse the pics. I free handed them rather than set up the tripod. Not that it matters...I suck at pictures even with the tripod..







Waiting for paint to dry pretty much blows. But at least I got a few other things to work on to fill in the time.

Sorry, I can't seen to see the helmet in that shot. I think it's because of Wilma Deering's nice tummy!

Well...here it is. The Buck Rogers motorcycle slash Earth Defense Directorate rescue helmet.















Hope you enjoy it. Sometime or another I'll find a better visor for it. But I don't plan on riding any motorcycles in the future wearing it...so it should be ok.

That's looking great. As with all other things in life, the more cruddy and used and pitted and dirty and damaged it is the more authentic it looks, so don't worry too much about scratches and imperfections, but instead work with them to add a reality to the helmet.

It has a very distinctive firefighter helmet look, helmets that in their own rights are or were inspired by the German standard issue Heer helmets, best known from WW2. The Nato helmets of today is also based on that old German design, just with the skirt altered to go up a bit in the back, as it was discovered to be a good way to break someone's neck, by pulling back on the helmet from behind. YAY... a little history lesson... sorry about that.
