Yes, it was repainted probably more than once when it was used for promotions in ‘77 and ‘78. I think there was a discussion here or on another forum about just when it disappeared into this collection. What I can recall: It seems that it may have been worn down and damaged during the promotions. Molds were made in CA and several promo tour replicas were made. It may have been sent back to the UK before ESB production in ‘79 to take a mold for making the ESB version. Then it appears to have disappeared. Then about 35 years later it appears in this French millionaire’s collection. I too cannot believe that what may be the single most recognizable movie prop ever left Lucasfilm’s possession honestly. If it was stolen, it may still technically be Lucasfilm’s to claim ownership, but “possession” and international law is complex I suppose.

I have seen that faceplate with my own eyes when I visited the collection near Paris about three years ago. It was I who found the image of the faceplate lying next to the Indy whip when I did some research about the original Highlander swords at the Harrisons place at Elstree Studios. There were more images, also some including a dome, but they were never published as far as I know. So somehow the faceplate found it‘s way from Elstree to France. I have my theories, but no proof. I only hope that we get the chance some day to see that faceplate in an exhibition up and close. This will finally answer a lot of questions.

It seems you can rent his exhibition. Though, the face mask doesn't seem to be part of the listed items I assume is what you can rent.

Came across this Vader helmet/armor on Ebay. They claim it's an original production made ANH helmet and armor that was not used on screen. No documentation or certificate of authenticity. Aquired from Star wars prop maker's private collection after he passed away.10k starting bid. What do guys think?

It doesnt matter what this is. I can tell you its not related to the production at all. It has no tells that separates it from a replica. A story isn't proof for such a bold claim to a piece that he is trying to attach to the production of the second highest grossing film in order to get a few $$$

Edit: the more I look at it the more I see Shadow FX/SPFX.

Plus it's in far to good of shape to be 40 years old. That dome is pristine even more then the screen used dome. Even if it was not used storage and handeling would have tattered it over the years. The guys who get paid to do.what they do, do not handle these things like we do with our replicas.

Edit again: one last thing! The aplication of the gunmetal does not match the film's gunmetal. It looks sponged on instead of brushed on although eBay likes to crush image resolution so it's hard to see the details.

Agreed. Makes me wonder about how many "singular" Vader heads have shown up for auction over the years. It has been covered here and most of them are the real deal but I wonder what may have snuck through.

And not even talking about Glenn Beck!
