This helmet has not done any time on the exhibit circuit that I've seen. Far as I know, it is still in the Lucasfilm archives. It is interesting that the picture on the far bottom
right, which had to be taken sometime after production, years from the looks of it, still shows the helmet as having tubes that are intact. While in the two smaller images
the tubes of been clearly broken off. It just goes to show you how little respect these original helmets get. And as I've said before, they are simply tools and not showpieces
sitting on someone's shelf.

Very interesting. Admittedly, I never really studied this helmet that hard. Due to its complexity and unique details, it never occurred to me there might be two of them. I had
heard the one was in the archives, and then when I saw the other pictures I wondered what it'd been doing in the archives that was causing so much damage?

Have you personally seen this other helmet? Or how do you know it's one in private hands, and not the same one in the archives? If I may ask?

I have not seen this particular one in person, a friend of mine saw and photographed it prior to the owner at the time selling it back in the 90's.

I'm quite sure that I took the pic on the bottom far right during my visit of the archives back in 1995. Could it be possible that all three pics on the bottom show the same faceplate, but at different times and in different condition? AFAIR, there was only one fat-lipped stunt faceplate in existence.

Sorry Tom yes, the far right one is your pic from the archives, the two left of that are of a different helmet. My other hard drive is down but Ill post a pic or two at some point when I get it up and running.

Vadermonkey is totally correct. These are two helmets. Notice I didn't use the word different. They are pretty nearly identical, but the helmet on the left
which would have to be the earlier image (without broken tusk/tubes) has chips in the paint where none can be found in the two images to it's right and
the wear pattern on the mount is different as well. Also, the foam inside the eyes is different. The external foam is also more detached on the would-be
earlier image to the left.

So, I guess I have to add helmet #8 Now.

This also goes back to what I was saying on the C-PIH 2012 thread about helmets leaving the archive. The helmet on the left is missing the tusk, but is otherwise
undamaged, whereas the helmet to the right has broken tubes, chips in the paint and damage to the dome, therefore I suspect it was of little practical use to LFL
anymore and was allowed to leave the archives. How that happens, I do not know.

Know it's an old thread, but while searching on some references i stumbled over it.
Would you agree that the upper mouthmesh on the RotJ helmets were painted black, while the lower one was left just silver?

This image from the Wire shows the black and silver like you said.

Yes it's also on the ESB and on the Jedi Propstore helmet.
So as it seems the meshes in ESB and Jedi were painted together with the mask and not were installed after painting.

Or, it could simply have rusted. When wearing the helmet, doesn't your breath hit the teeth grill most?

Sure after 40 years it could be everything.
But if it's rust, the mesh below also should be rusty and not remain in shiny silver.
I doubt they painted the lower mesh while placed inside the mask and put the upper one later in after painting.

Its really not hard to look around. The gallery here is free to view. The very first picture I came across show the black top and silver bottom.

I originally thought the upper grills on the ROTJs were black also, however
there's been a lot of pictures even on this forum that show that it's not. While
I was looking at the helmet and photographing it at the 'Where the Magic
meets the Myth exhibit' I noticed that helmet which I have identified in this
thread as #2, had a silver upper grille. Also, if you look at pictures on the
thread right near this the one titled 'recent screen grabs' there is pics of the
number 3 helmet where you can very clearly see that the upper grill is silver,
and has a smaller, tighter mesh grill underneath it. The #2 grill looks just like it.

Also, the teeth grill sits deeper, in shadow, surrounded by black painted teeth and shiny metal usually reflects what is around it.
