Starlog magazine hosted a Star Wars 10th Anniversary Convention in Los Angeles in 1987. The souvenir program was kindly uploaded by a fan at http://thestarwarstrilogy.com/starwars/post/2013/01/02/starlog-salutes-star-wars-souvenir-program.

In this program, Ralph McQuarrie contributed a few early sketches of Darth Vader that had not previously been published (on pages 20-21).

While this doesn't relate to TFA, thought this might be of interest to RMQ fans. I had not seen these sketches before.

The TFA TIE fighter helmet and sleeker costume looks to me as if it could have been inspired by figure on the left side in the following RMQ painting. Probably drawing upon his aerospace knowledge and work experience at Boeing, this looks closer to an actual flight suit a fighter pilot would wear.

And this guy in the painting must be a spy, being in the midst of all those Rebel, eh I mean Resistance, fighters!

I just noticed in TFA the first time we get a look inside the Star destroyer hanger, a single TIE fighter pilot is running towards us in the foreground. Same depiction as in the early RMQ painting:
