I know there had been some talk about this, but it's official.

'Star Wars' films to be rereleased in 3-D
From Associated Press
September 29, 2010 1:20 PM EDT
NEW YORK (AP) — May the force be in 3-D.

Lucasfilm announced Wednesday that the "Star Wars" films will be converted into 3-D and rereleased theatrically. All six films of the saga, beginning with episode one, "The Phantom Menace," and concluding with episode six, "Return of the Jedi," are expected to be released in theaters in 2012.

Lucasfilm and distributor Twentieth Century Fox have not yet set a release date. Industrial Light & Magic is supervising the conversion process, which it promises will be "cutting edge." Many previous conversions of films shot in 2-D, such as "Clash of the Titans," have drawn criticism for cheapening 3-D.

John Knoll, visual effects supervisor for Industrial Light & Magic said a proper conversion to 3-D "is a matter of taking the time and getting it right."

Geez, I think they were talking about this before ROTS. About time! I don't really care so much about the 3D aspect of the rerelease as much as I'm looking forward to seeing Star Wars on the big screen again. I only ever got to see the Special Editions in theaters and have been hoping for a second chance.

I remember watching EP 2 on IMAX. There was a scene where Obi and Ani were in the elevator going up to see Padme. Both were against the window, which was bright. In the regular film, the outside light behind their hair looked okay. But on the IMAX it looked hella processed.

Hopefully they know what they're doing....

With the previous tampered SE releases I honestly doubt it. It's gonna be a hack-job of mixed technologies that jar up against each other and is too much of a distraction. Either go for a full replacement of all SFX or keep the 100% original stuff. The frankenstein look of the SE's are just... :banger

Just FYI with an Oppo Blu-ray player you can watch an 2D DVD as 3D. Amazing to see the OT in 3D.

Is it true 3D, or 2D images on a three dimensional plane?
