Hello

Just to introduce myself, I am fairly new here - and up to this point have been happy learning from what's gone before. However I was puzzled about one thing. I recently picked up a 20th century copy and I was wondering whether there had ever been an agreement of where these originated from.

Everything I have read says that these came from tour helmets made for the special editions in the mid 90s, and Don Bies said he created 18 in 1995 for this. But to do this he took a casting from the Rick Baker mould (in plaster) which he then reworked into a new master to mould and create the 18.

But the rick baker mould doesn't have tabs and the 20th century does. So where is the 20th C from? Was Don mistaken on the source, which seems unlikely as he said there was only one mould at LFL at that time and I'm sure he would have recalled moulding one of the existing helmets, or did the the 20th centurys come from somewhere else?

Anyway, hello and I'm sure someone here has put up an answer to this at some point. I just haven't been able to track it down!

Thanks

Nick

News to me that the casting he used was from the Rick Baker mold. Only thing I've heard was he took an unfinished casting in the archives and molded that for the tour helmets.

Come to think about it, may even be the same unfinished casting that was used to make the UK tour helmets that are known as the VP... but that's just speculation on my part, so maybe I'm just reaching.

C.

I picked that up from here

Posts 80 and 85. Kind of implies a different source for the 20th centuries....

Hey... you're right. Good catch. Though, when linking to the RPF these days, always link to this site: http://www.thereplicapropforum.com/

So, the fact that the 20th C's have tabs, they are either not from the tour helmets that Don Biess made or... the UK mold also resided in the archives at one time and it was mistaken as the one Rick Baker did.

Certainly begs the question whether what we know is really the truth.

No worries. But definitely an interesting question. But with all the cloak and dagger mentality surrounding many of these things... we may not ever get the full picture.

But, it is pretty clear that the Archives contains more than we think, so it really wouldn't surprise me if it DID contain the UK mold as well... or did at one time.
