Ok..bored on lockdown so here we go!

Around 2008 or so I did a run of knurled ANH belt box knobs with Vadermonkey for some of our friends.

The fact that they are knurled and come from the Michell turntable is now widely known and accepted.

In doing research on the knobs I noticed it appeared to me that the top inner knob on the left belt box was shorter than the rest. At first I thought that knob was the smaller one on the turntable, but I recently learned the diameter is different ruling that part out.

My only other thought centers around the red washers. I have heard from a reliable source that those red washers are not metal, but some type of rubber material.

I am thinking that tightening the knob a bit too much may squish the washer and allow the knob to appear shorter. On the attached pic of Ellers recently sold belt you can see the short knob..and the washer under it looks different to me, but maybe I’m seeing things. Thoughts?

Excellent topic! It wouldn't surprise me at all. I've wondered if the red washers aren't really washers but more "cup" shaped (if that makes sense) so that there is a lip surrounding the bottom of the knobs rather than the knobs just resting on top of the washers.

I used finishing washers on my boxes that are kind of cupped, but I think the screen used boxes use red rubber/silicone ones. They are very small washers, but very thick. Something uncommon to find in a metal washer (that would be painted) but very common in silicone. Pure speculation on my part though

Have a set of Mikes ANH boxes but without knurled knobs. So if you ever decide to do a run of them again…….i would be in :thumbsup

Most high end boxes have always featured rubber over metal. I have both versions. Both can work but it’s widely believed they were rubber and not plastic/metal.

Yea, I'm sorry I should have been more specific. I was thinking the "washers" are rubber/plastic since some of them appear distorted in referenced photos.
