I've seen this photo a few times - but I haven't seen this large and detailed. I know those globby details around the kill stripes weren't there on screen - they've been added afterwards. On purpose or some kind of damage? No idea.

Still - this photo really lets you see the nuanced craftsmanship of Joe Johnston's work. His work really didn't have that "paint by numbers" look at all.

In this photo - is Joe burnishing paint no the helmet, gently softening the details, buffing the helmet, or adding another light layer of paint for more detail? If you look closely at the helmet, in particular in the green fields, you can see light color washings - as if they were added via a cloth. Kinda like the one in the photo below.

Cool pic John :thumbsup
Don't know where, but i have seen this anywhere before just smaller.LOL.

It's really insane how much details this helmet has and i guess if someone really wants to duplicate that, he will need month for it.

John those black spots indeed have a 3D quality to them.
I don't think they were intentionally added. The helmet suffered many additional cracks, paint chips, and even a new white paint drip in the black area on the antenna side.

It was molded to make stunt helmets for ROTJ and I suspect most of the extra wear and tear was from that or it's time kicking around the shop.

Attached is my test paintjob I did a few years ago. I was only testing my colours and techniques and actually cut a piece of a junky old casting, so only painted what you see there. Going to get going on the whole helmet soon hopefully !
