Yuck. Yuck. Yuck. Yuck. YUCK. :puke

Carsten, you need to share that comparison with Hot Toys. I was at their website marveling at their figures and it's absolutely mind-boggling how their sculptors can capture such stunning human likenesses yet when asked to do something like Darth Vader or a Stormtrooper everything is just "off". As we all well know getting "the look" just right is deceptively difficult. Hasbro can't do it, Sideshow Toys can't do it, Kaiyodo has come close, but no one has nailed it -- yet.

Hot Toys stuff is amazing. If money and space were no object I'd LOVE to own most of their Star Wars line -- as well as their '89 Batman and Joker ( I'm still hoping that their proposed 1/6 scale '66 Batmobile will become a reality). That Darth helmet is a disaster that needs to be avoided.

Marmit and Gentle Giant (min-bust) Stormies are almost perfect. Almost.

Usually HT don't reply to fan mail, not even when issues with products are mentioned. I'd say better post this comparison on as many forums and threads as possible.

Someone at Hot Toys may have seen something! They posted "final product" photos for the 1/6 ANH Vader on their Facebook page this past weekend. It's not as awesome as Carsten's work but it is a VAST improvement on the prototype:

Yeah. They definitely improved on the helmet sculpt. Looks almost perfect to me now. Only thing detracting is the abhorrent paint job.

I'm really digging it.

I'm sure many of you are following the thread over at Sideshowcollectors. If not, head over there and check this out. This mod show how great the HT Vader can be with some work. At stock level I think it is on par with the old Marmit, as they both have their strengths and flaws... but this mod completely blows everything I've seen so far out of the water.

I'll just wait for the next HT Vader, maybe it will be a ROTJ reveal. :thumbsup

I probably shouldn't have but I went ahead and got one. I had it pre-ordered. i haven't had a chance to open it yet lol.

Thanks for sharing that thread Carsten. Man, that thing is 1,000 pages long! I'm guessing that the particular results you are directing us to are the ones in post #9510? Looks stunning!

Dave

Well, they started modding several 50-100 or so pages back... so I watched his progression. You can always track back through the thread to the beginning of the mods. There are some minor mods that can achieve the ANH look without going insane awesome like JazzInc and the other modders did and that's pulling up the cod and belt and pull the belt boxes closer to the belt buckle - though, that mod can risk snapping the belt, so be careful. I advise anyone who's thinking of modding theirs to check out that thread I linked to, as they've highlighted all the danger zones.

This is how JazzInc's modded Vader looks and what he did:

Here is the updated list of modifications:

-repaint and weathering on the helmet
-slight buffing of the satin, just like the movie
-removed the dome
-put metal tape on the inside of the eyes to get a bit more red
-removed ribs on dome and sanded down the top of the 'head'
-reglued the dome slightly asymmetrically
-weathered and repainted the armor
-wired up the belt boxes and voice system to 4,5 dc adapter
-redressed him with cod as high as it could go
-chest box attached with double sided tape right underneath the armor
-weathered the belt, boxes and buckle
-removed the wire from the robe and added a heavier one along the bottom of the robe
-weathered and polished the shin armor
-painted all the hands flat black
-used double sided tape to really attach the glove to the hand seamlessly
-weathered and repainted the chest box
-did a lot of futzing and water treatment to get it to fall naturally
-added cold cathode saber
-removed all excess fabric from the inside seams of the tunic and vest
-cut some of the rubber from the side of the chest so the arms can go straight down

That looks stunning. I'm most likely going to leave mine as is and do a custom Vader when a certain kit becomes available ;-)
