Although it is missing all of the wonderful lumps and bumps, it still is an impressive piece of work. Did you paint this yourself?

Thank you Darth Stone for the compliment. I feel the lumps and bumps should stay with the truly authentic cast where they belong. Yes, I did the paint work at my shop. I use the PPG line of automotive paint. I'm sure you are familiar with PPG given your background in the auto-repair industry. I used Toyota paint code 1E3 Phantom Grey for the gunmetal.

I dont want to bend your topic unasked into a discussion of color, but this question of the correct gray metal I find, in contrast to many other themes which have been discussed exhaustively here, somewhat neglected. Unlike questions of sculpting it's unfortunately also difficult to substantiate this question of colors with images, simply because there is not a common neutral situation (light) to compare different solutions.
Nevertheless, I think your choosen gray is really very appropriate :thumbsup
In regard of my own helmet I have kept this question simple by using the color of my car (BMW Sterling Grey 427) http://www.darth-vader.ch/props/vader_esb_1301/DSC00158.jpg
