Absolutely gorgeous. I've read so many threads around here but forgot that you had never painted one of your own. Nice!

There has been some that have thought that the SL ANH doesn't have the original paint on its surface as seen on the original ANH helmet as in the Tantive IV scenes. A lot of the focus had been on discussion of the C-scar, and justifiably so. However, that is just one detail. What of, for example, Vader's left front cheek face? Is there detail there that indicates the original paint surface was preserved at the time Rick Baker molded the original mask? The answer is yes. There is a complex imperfection on the left front cheek surface that initially detectable by virtue of some black paint showing beneath (or on top of?) the gunmetal. One of the most identifying features of this imperfection is a ring-shaped detail. The comparison below shows a closeup of the original ANH check (left closeup image) and that imperfection along with the ring which shows up better if one reduces the intensity of the LUT somewhat and applies a bit of sharpening (center closeup image). That ring is also clearly on the SL ANH in exactly the same location as on the original (right closeup image). Interestingly, by the time of the Chorbis photoshoot, that detail is completely gone, as there was some touch-up paint work by then in specific areas. This is but one example indicating how early the mold had been taken off the original ANH mask by Rick Baker.

wow. very interesting indeed.
very cool. just love it when you point out all the fine details about the SL compared to the film used helmet.
more proof to its validity.
and i hope you dont mind Thomas. but i did a little research my self to see if i could locate this on the screen used helmet as well in some screen shots.. and low an behold i did indeed.
hopefully you all will be able to see it. did the best i could with windows paint... :lol

It is there during the Chronicles shoot too. You seem to be under the impression that the repaint "removed" the surface details. It didn't: It just made them softer. Things that were actually repaired before the repaint are also evident on the SL. Everything still points to post repaint in my view.

Of course, it would be cool if we had more clear and close up pictures of the helmet from the Chronicles shoot to study. There are hints of it in other pictures too, but not clear enough to be worth posting.

In my opinion of reading vader threads over the last 13 years and many by you, I have to say this illustration is probably the BEST one you have ever come up with. Clear and concise and not debatable as to what we are seeing. Very well done. :thumbsup

Thanks I appreciate that....it isn't always easy to try to show details that small...but I try....

About the Chronicles....if someone can show me that detail on the chronicles ANH helmet I'd be very interested to see it. But keep in mind, the detail isn't just in relief (ie: how it stands out from the surface), there is black paint associated with both the ring and the imperfection below it.

Yes... until it was touched up by Kermit - removing the black, but keeping surface detail - and later when it was repainted for the footprint ceremony and the Chronicles shoot. It is very simple deduction and everyone who's painted with metallic colors will know this. You can see the circular pattern in the exact spot you highlighted on the two Chronicles pictures I posted + if it was just paint and nothing on the surface, you wouldn't have it on your cast. Paint doesn't cover previous paint application formations or blemishes in the surface, if the covering layer is very thin, it does not annihilate or eradicate surface details, unless it is a very thick layer. And the black streaking can easily be covered, while keeping the surface detail of how it looked preserved.

I really do not know how else to explain this. The detail is also on the Corbis pictures, so I advice you to re-examine those with more scrutiny - the issue with the Corbis and Chronicles shoots is that the helmet is photographed from so far away, compared to the screen helmet, the creaturefeaturekid picture you own and your helmet. But the detail is there. The black smudge isn't important, the surface detail is. And that surface detail remains all the way up through those various stages.

Finding it doesn't prove when it was molded. Only the features that lack on the SL does.

Not wanting to forget... cool find, btw!

Forgot to mention the paint job is very nice. It really captures the look of that Tantive helmet. :thumbsup

Nice paintjob!
So have people finally come round to both sides of the mouth being gunmetal then?
On the front surface of the mouth triangle; are there some silver streaks where an errant brushstroke overshot the sides of the mouth? Or is that area just that rough?

No, why should we? There are gunmetal highlights all over the face mask - there are on the right cheek with the debated scar, yet no one is claiming that is gunmetal colored just because it has a few brush strokes. The inside of the mouth walls have gunmetal brush strokes. In fact, the only place on the face mask that doesn't have gunmetal brush strokes is the black area just above the left cheek - everything else has had a go with the highlighting. To claim the paint job is as simple as straight black and straight gunmetal is thinking in ESB terms. The ANH face mask is utterly as complex as painting the Fett helmet, due to the nature of the metallic colored paint and the way it was used.

This was one of the pictures used to "prove" that that side is supposed to be grey. But tell me what you actually see in that picture. What do you see on the right cheek? Brush strokes - and that is not claimed to be grey. What do you see on the black bars with the U shaped depression on either side of the grey center ridge of the chest armor? Brush strokes. So, are those supposed to be grey now too?

More clearly seen in this one:

I have seen nothing presented that will change my view that the ANH helmet is BLACK with varying degrees of gunmetal highlights, compared to the ESB and RotJ that are very clearly and distinctly two-tone.

And regarding the circular artifact on the cheek claimed not being in the Corbis photos, I present this:

It's from a higher resolution version of this one:
