I am currently working on building both a 1:1 tauntaun wall mount and 1:4 tauntaun full figure

I am wonderring if anyone has any 'behind the scenes' images or reference materials that I can see to make these more accurate before I contimue (preferably stuff that is not already posted to the NET). I have a ton of images and reference for the stop motion figure but am more looking for reference for the full scale props.

Thanks!!
Paul

Nice progress. What is that white stuff you are sculpting on top off? Is that plaster bandages?

Yes. I build cardboard, foam and crunched up paper forms then cover them in 3 layers of plaster bandage. I then sculpt over the bandage with NSP Medium Sulphur-free Plasteline. This allows me to cast a latex mold direcly onto the sculpt without treating it first. More progress pics here: http://www.thedragonsden.ca/Sculptures/index.html

Cool, thanks. Doing it this way reduces weight as well, right?

Actually it's the only way I know how to do large sculpts. :)

Well, I've been looking for ways to reduce weight and material use on my sculpts (meaning the expensive apoxie sculpt) and this seems like a very good option to try out. Certainly makes the basic shape strong and sturdy.

Do you have other works you can show off. The level of sculpting detail on these sculpts are pretty damn good, so it could be interesting to see what other stuff you've done.

Apoxie sculpt is great if you can work fast and don't want to have to cast your sculpt. I use it to build armatures over the wire when I sculpt with Sculpey.

I have not done many sculptures but here are a few:
A foal I built pit of wire, plaster bandage and fiberglass when I was in highschool (I am 48 now): http://www.thedragonsden.ca/horses/3d01.jpg
An Alien head I sculpted about 20 years ago: http://www.thedragonsden.ca/Sculptures% ... n_Mask.png
About 3 years ago I started this Lycan but was not happy with it so it was never finished: http://www.thedragonsden.ca/Sculptures%202/lycan03.jpg
And most recently, I am doing a 10 inch commission of an anthro rat fighter character: http://www.thedragonsden.ca/sculptures% ... e_wip.jpeg

So these and the 2 tauntaun sculpts is pretty much it. I am not really experienced and am pretty much making all this up as I go along. My brother is a professional artist and sculptor (working mostly in bronze) and will likely be finishing up these tauntaun sculpts with fur and skin texturing and doing the castings.

I like your style. Very natural and you have a great sense of proportions. The pose on the Lycan is a little weird, though, with a different pose, I really think it could work. Nice shape on its head - nailed the Underworld Lycan look, which many fail to capture.

I tend to rush into projects without thinking things through. That is why I stopped this sculpt. It is not just the pose that wasn't working but also much of the anatomy.

The 1/4 tauntaun just went through some major surgery today as I was not happy with how thick the legs and hips were looking. I ended up ripping off much of the hips and legs sculpting and cut the plaster armature to half it's width. I am letting the new plaster dry before continueing but I think I have a much better base now.

I think what was throwing things off was the small slender torso you'd sculpted. I haven't really studied the Tauntaun, but their thighs where definitely BIG, but the torso was also a bit thicker - which would be consistent with an animal that lives in an ice-world, it would require a lot of fat to keep itself warn and to prevent heat from escaping too rapidly. The mod on the legs may end up looking better, but I think you need to fatten the torso as well.

The best Lycan pose I've seen is from the third movie where Lucian first face off with the wild Lycans to save Sonja. THAT's powerful.

I think you are correct about torso. That is the problem with trying to combine difference references such as the maquette, full size prop and some statue figures. The thinner hips and legs along with a slightly larger torse will look much better I hope. Plus the finished sculpt will have either sculpted fur or real fur applied so that will also help bulk her out a bit.

As for that lycan pose you are talking about, do you think you could provide a screen cap? I am very interested in trying another sculpt of a lycan and definitely like the hairier versions from the later films. I think even a version of William and the Vanhelsing werewolf would be fun to try later on.
