Hi there, just joined up and this is my first post, so here goes.
I'm doing a hasbro clone helmet conversion and want to take a mould off it with the intention of raffling the result off for charity. Could anyone tell me how much silicone would be required to do this. The RTV silicone I've seen is sold by the kilo so if anyone knows how much I might need it would be much appreciated. I know recasting is frowned upon but would taking a mould off a modified hasbro be ok. I don't wanna drop a clanger before I've even started. Cheers

Hi. Sorry to see you facing a wall of silence, but there haven't been much activity running through here lately, so answers may take a while... and sadly, I can't help you, which is why I haven't replied to your inquiry. Hope someone comes to your aid with a satisfying, sufficient answer.

C.

Hi Steven,

As your going to mould a helmet, you do not want make the mould out of one layer of silicone, you want to build the mould up in stages.

First, ensure you cover the lid with some form of release agent, as your lid is plastic, a PVA Release Agent should be fine.

Take a small quantity of silicon with no thickener, and stipple it over the helmet ensuring you use the brush to push the silicone into all of the details area's. Take your time.

Once that starts to dry you can then apply a second coat, with some thickener added, then a 3rd thicker coat. You mould needs it to be between half and 1" thick. You can make your silicone batches in small quantities, if you work with someone they can whip up another batch of silicone quickly if you run out.

I am assuming your going to back the mould with Fibreglass, if so, once your silicone is dry, add a layer of resin then lay your fibreglass. Making sure you stipple each layer and then roll with a stippled roller if you have one. Put 3 to 4 layers of fibreglass and let it all cure, leave it overnight and your mould should be ready to cast from.

Just take your time, have a look at some of these YT vids and they will help you.

Best of Luck

I would probably buy a 5kg pack as it's cheaper than buying in separate kilo packs. You will have plenty and maybe some left over for other projects.
Loz gave you some good advice.
Instead of Fibreglassing a jacket you can use lots of newer products now which are safer to use like Plast Paste by smooth on http://www.smooth-on.com/Urethane-Plast ... index.html
there are other companies that make a similar product. It save on getting in loads of fibreglass products in if you don't already have them. It's also a very quick way to make a jacket.

Again check out mould making on YT there are some great vids there....

@sskunky

I used some of that Plasti-Paste, It was really good, not as cheap as FG of course but so much easier to work with.

Just one point though, like silicon, it does have a limited life shelf. A month or two, where a FG jacket lasts much longer.
