I know the picture is labeled eFX, but this is the MR trooper scan data and their cleaned up digital model. Man... what a shame... just look at that raw scan data!!!

If eFX ever revisits the Stormtrooper helmet I surely hope they'll go right back to that original scan data and print that and then if mods are needed, to do them on the physical model... but man... I can't imagine why that would be needed. Just look at that helmet scan.

Only reason for digital restoration of such a model would be to go for the symmetrical look, but then there is only one way of doing that - have the computer averaging EVERYTHING. No one side mirrored for both sides or a few tweaks here and there. No, either flip the scan and insert it on top of the regular scan and fuse the two out into an average helmet. Or... maybe that's a unneeded step too many... just take the regular scan and then average it. Should be fairly simple to do and would require little to no modeling.

Would be cool if eFX somehow got the license to produce sixth scale helmets as well, scaled or scanned from the originals, since no other company seems to wanna do that. If they could acquire the MR stunt scan that would already be 1 helmet. They also scanned the X-Wing helmets... so those should be easy to scale. They have the Legend Vader and now the Legend hero trooper... scan and shrink and perfect tiny collectible that Gentle Giant missed out on - GG doesn't do their helmets in sixth scale to be truthful... basically their torsos and helmets are smaller scale, while the arms are sixth scale, which is why they often look so weirdly disproportionate.

Hey... one can dream, can't he!? :cheers

I remember talking t the MR guys at the time they did this. I actually asked them why they didnt just use the digital scan (rather than borrowing JJ's helmet and recasting) but their response was that the scan was simply "not good enough" to use.

IIRC the resolution was just not high enough

Cheers

Well, without a larger picture of the actual scan than what I found online it's difficult to tell, but the resolution looks fine enough on that scan for a perfect print. So what helmet did they scan, as that is NOT a hero helmet scan... and their story was always that they molded a stunt and scanned a hero helmet.

Thats exactly what I was told by MR, that they scaned the "lens-missing" Hero in the archive but that it just wasnt good enough to make the helmet. Maybe their issue was not resolution but the ability of their manufacturers in China to print it? really dont know but was surprisd when next i heard they had agreed to borrow Joiners Stunt so they could "Hero-ise" it.

Ive still got the 1st version they did, it was pretty shaky with a bump under the eye, the teeth were dreadful as were the ears. Over a couple of weeks I got them to alter a few things (like the ears and teeth, remove the bump) but since it was effectely a lump of fiberglass there was only so much we could do. However in the end it looked pretty good and sold in volumes (including a re run by EFX) so I was pretty happy with the final result.

Cheers

But if that scan is supposed to be a hero... then there's all manners of wrong with that scan, as that clearly shows a stunt. And it is clear to see that they used that scan to make the digital model next to it... and that digital model looks like the end product, so what gives?
