Hey, gang -

Taking a break from Vader but I thought a good addition to the mask collection was this cast of the original Michael Crawford Phantom mask. Here's one photo but I did more of a rundown on the RPF:

To my knowledge, this is the only one to have been somewhat extensively photographed (with more to come) outside of the production photos way back in the 80's. The only Crawford masks I know of are a few that were auctioned off later on. I did always want one of these and never thought it would happen til this situation came up out of the blue.

Its a "normal" size face too - too small for me, really.

And I'd still like to get a really great Myers/ Halloween mask at some point.

Oh, masks...

Had a chance to buy a real Samurai mask/ helmet but way out of my price range at around 9 g's. That would look awesome next to the DJ helmet for sure.

Mucho cool! :eek

There is a similarity between The Phantom and The Dark Lord of the Sith. They both wear masks to cover a hideous disfigurement.

:cheers

Yeah, but the phantom came first. LOL.

Can't wait to see you paint this up. :thumbsup

Its weird - deceiving because of the bad lighting in these photos but the mask is currently painted. All those shadows that you see are actually more so paint and not light effects. Doesn't seem like it, huh?! What I VERY much need to do is two things:

1. Photo the thing in straight on light so that it shows the different colors.

2. Spray final top coat to even out the areas that are more and less glossy/ flat.

Here, for instance, is Crawford wearing a mask that is painted pure white - notice how we can't see much of anything apart from the actual shadows?

And with that is a photograph of a stage used mask (different Phantom actor) that has been sprayed with rattle can but meant for very hard lighting at a distance:

Fantastic prop! I went as the Phantom for Halloween back when the show was at its peak (would have been awesome to go as Lon Chaney--have to do that some day). I used an off-the-shelf mask of course.

Very cool, lucky to have something so rare. I never saw the Phantom but can appreciate the artistry behind that mask.
