Well I only saw you briefly a couple of years ago but I didn't think it was you

Brian

Actually it was only Paul Welsh's efforts and determination that kept what remains of Elstree Studios open

It was Darth Karo who posted the original link IIRC.

:lol

I'm glad he made those efforts. Is it still the same for you visiting Elstree studios Brian as much has changed or are there certain elements that remain for you regardless. I see a couple of the old work shops are still present.

Hi Paul,

As you no doubt know the main part of the studios were sold off to build Tesco's. The main stages all went but stages 7,8 and 9 remain which were always considered as Television stages. The art dept where I did all the work for ANH would now be in the Tesco's carpark :sad5
There are still some of the original workshops (one of which I had for several years with my own business - Elstree Design and Construction). They don't have the facilities to make major movies anymore - it's mainly television programmes ie Who wants to be a Millionaire and Big Brother ( which is in the outside tank that was used for Moby Dick). The occassional small budget film is made there such as Gangsters 1 and Jack and the Beanstalk but I haven't heard of any films being made there for some time.

Brian

It is a pity given the history of Elstree Studios that at one point later on there wasn't reinvestment and revitalization of the production business there. But it is very interesting to hear what became of it. If only your workshop had remained part of the surviving studios, that would have been a real Vader mecca!

Good to know Brian, thanks! I ventured into the workshops last year and it was very cool to experience that. Tesco occupies a vast amount of space now as you said and it's a shame to some degree but I understand things move on.

To make a very weird analagy it's a bit like the nostalgic Harland and Wolff shipyard most famous for building the Titanic (and her sister ships) but today while it's changed some what from a visual standpoint it's still there. Shame things have to move on sometimes.
