Well... I went ahead and wrote them... but I think if more people wrote... the more it won't just seem like a crack-pot idea from one guy to them. :cheers

Thanks NHM - now let's get down to the nitty gritty - what percentage do you want? :lol

A chance of getting a signed copy of your book would be all I hope for. :thumbsup

I have always thought that a 3M's Vader development 'thing' would be
a great idea...McQuarrie, Mollo & Muir.

To be honest why Master Replicas never made an original trilogy Vader is beyond me. They obviously done the ROTS Vader. eFX have the chance to get a great ANH Vader if they wanted to.

I would love a Brian Muir signature edition - possibly a Dave Prowse dual signature edition as well (not much chance of that since LFL have blanked him since the 80s)

No doubt we will get the Hayden Christensen signature edition :puke

I think simply because Vader wasn't in the prequels until ROTS and at that point they altered the design. If they had brought something out prior to that, it would have made marketing the new Vader difficult.

They know who their customers are and what they want. Most MR/eFX buyers prefer the idealized, shiny, symmetrical look.
Even the "screen accurate" MR/eFX Hero stormtrooper helmet is slightly idealized.

I wonder if it is really that.....if they offered an OT Vader helmet I think it would be just as well received as the MR ROTS....of course I like to think even more so.

No. Because it is a commercial product they are trying to sell. All of us here
have seen up close how 'craptacular' the ANH props were. Sure, we can
appreciate the charm, but joe shmo who ponys up north of $500 for it is going
to be sending it right back if it looked anything like the ANH screen helmet.

I think as a business model idealised, shiny, clean new-looking products are
what the lowest common denominator of consumer wants. They don't understand
(or even care) what the differences are between the various Vaders. To them
it is a nice shiny representation of Vader.

If there is one reaction I have noticed from pretty much everyone who has seen
any of the Vaders I have had in my possession it is that, no matter what their
interest level / knowledge of Star Wars, they all comment how much bigger the
helmet is than they imagined.

I think the scale issue is enough to convince people they are purchasing an
authentic Vader.

Frustrating, but just the facts.

I agree. Even the Empire props are pretty crap to say the least and it's not what people expect, chips, blobs, flaws bad paint work and even now most think ESB is all prim and proper. The OT props are really not what the vast majority expect or even like apart from a handful of us in this community, it is the reason I stopped buying any official merchandise even though some of it looks okay.

Took a while for my observed opinion to catch up with Darthvaderv's.

Many of us know of the orange-peeling of the ESB dome paint job. As observed on the original TM dome, there appears to be a lacquer coating providing the gloss. It was once argued that the paint was polished to a gloss, but the existance of orange peel texture to the paint suggests otherwise, and the wetness of the on-screen dome suggest the lacquer was applied to gloss up the dome without first polishing the paint to a proper presentation finish. The flaws, were hardly visible on-screen; you had to study production photos to spot the flaws.

Not all flaws require photos though. I was studying the armor surface and was actually surprised to find that the ESB armor was not sanded down to a pristine finish, but that they painted over a casting that inherited all the sculpted irregularities of the original ANH armor, without finishing the surface. Some of the brightness of the light reflecting off the metallic gray portions of the armor hid the defects, and areas of the black paint covered the irregularities. You had to study the wetness and reflectivity of the gloss to notice the flaws.

We've learned that irregularities do not equal flaws. Cleaning something up so that it's ideal does not necessarily recreate a spectacular Vader. We all know how lacking a sanitized Vader can look. Those irregularities play an important part in adding character to the costume, and when you combine the obvious and the subtle of the appearance with the performance of the actor, you get a lethal combination that makes Vader one of the most enduring enemies of all time. :thumbsup

So was the original paint on the ANH gloss or more of a satin finish? I thought it was glossy.

Well the helmet seems more glossy, with smudges and so forth all over it, and the mask... well there's alot of discussion about the mask... but I think it boils down to a base of gloss black with areas of brushed metallic grey (gunmetal) and patches of maybe brushed gloss black that mixed slightly with the brushed metallic grey in spots...
