Hey, guys - Sorry about the "no show" lately but just busy. Okay - I painted the DJ as follows:

BARELY sanded the surface for paint because of all the original scratches and bruises on an ANH. To get surface tooth I sometimes used 600 grit, sometimes 1000, and other times a basic brown/pinkish paste from turtle wax that comes in a red circular container about 2 inches tall. It is a polish the name of which escapes me right now but it figures in later too.

I then used primer.

Used that rough polish again but barely.

Then used black car paint which comes in the cans at PEP boys. I saw them using this at ILM - the mounted ESB helmet and armor that was auctioned a ways back was painted with this stuff.

Once dry, I then used that turtle wax paste again to polish down the paint a bit and get rid of any paint effects here and there. Didn't spend too much time on it - just hit it with the polish a few times until it seemed "smoothish" and then stopped.

I figured that for the film they didn't spend more time than that.

NO clear coat. NO finer polishes or waxes after the turtle wax stuff.

I then masked off the face and sprayed it with the gun metal. YES, I know that it was brushed on but I didn't know what I had at the time and did it as a spray.

The gun metal I then left as is - maybe polished down any ridging where the paint colors meet but did otherwise not polish the gun metal.

Then done!

By the way - notice on the DJ that the shapes of the overall reflection in the eyes is the same as the original. Made an effort to reproduce this since the eyes were in the DJ/ SL mold. The SL has it too. THOSE ARE THE ACTUAL EYES IN THE SL if you have one. Same contouring is the important part.

Great reference! Makes it easy to compare, too!

DJ,

Do you have any photos of the DJ that were taken, specifically, at 6 feet distance? The shot I used and submitted to NHM was based off of a photo you once shared but it struck me as being possibly about 5 feet distance.

There is. It's placed as a RotJ helmet.

Yeah, the one with the simulation of the lightsaber cut revealing Luke's face.

never-before-seen-vader-helmet-pic-heavy-vt2620.html

I'll provide Carsten with a thumbnail on that.

Hey guys...I purchased a ROTJ helmet from TMP when he was advertising sets of Vader gear on Evil bay. Anyone know what it is derived from or if it should be up on the helmets page??

Cheers
TAZ
