I am curious to what the expert’s opinion as to what is the best and most accurate white paint for Stormtrooper armor. I know sometimes people have to repaint their armor to match the color of a newly painted helmet. Is there one that’s considered closest to screen accurate? What is the most commonly used, if not for the armor but for getting that screen look helmet?

I know many people have gone for the Humbrol white No22 in the 120ml size. It's quite robust for trooping too.

Hmm, interesting… Do people brush it on or do they use a sprayer?

Spraying gets a more even result and you use less paint. I think it's pretty certain that the originals were spray-painted as painting by hand would take too long - then details were painted by hand afterwards.

I like the Rustoleum Pro enamel Gloss white. It's not pure white, it has that accurate milky off white and gives a great gloss finish. Be warned, it's very easy to mess up as it's pretty finicky for a rattle can paint.

I have hand painted all my trooper lids with the humbrol #21 white and you dont see any brush marks.

I like this as the helmets instantly get the off white aged look we see in original found lids and the odd drip too, if you slap it on nice and thick.

Back to the screen used stuff, i believe that the armour was more if a cream colour and the helmets were sprayed white, but to be exact is a tough one.

Just a heads up, the original armor wasn't painted, just the "stunt" helmets, and they didn't match each other, so if you're going for "accurate" they shouldn't match unless you have a hero style lid.

In other words don't sweat it too much if they don't match.

Really?

Is this just your theory or do you know this for a fact?

Based on archive pics I have -- yes fact. The only areas I could see painted on the armor were rivet heads and where the glue seeped out where parts were joined.

Hope that helps.

I think it's possible the suits and helmets were painted. I can never accept anything as 'fact' unless I either see 'something' first hand or see some hard evidence which proves 'something'. So far, all we have are peoples opinions and some photos, which don't count for much in my book. For instance, AT-AT helmets were always said to be white for years even with all the reference photos available. Turns out they were made from black plastic painted grey...

TM, after our PM's I did a lot more studying of the pics and I am more convinced of my stance. Man, I wish we could show some of these pics.

The ANH/ESB Hero helmets were unpainted white ABS

The ANH/ESB Stunt Helmets were Khaki HDPE painted white

The Armour was made from unpainted white ABS

Having had access to countless archive images and personal access to original replica parts I am sure of this.

TM - Quite right that people shouldnt assume anything and my "expose" of the AT-AT proved that. Although as a case in point, we always knew the AT-AT was Black ABS that was painted - the revelation was that grey not white paint was used. Which does back up another bug-bear of mine - that too many people rely ONLY on photo eidence.

Cheers

Jez
