This thread is amazing! All this info is making my head explode. I think i have to upgrade to a bigger hard drive.

I have one question (hope this wasnt already asked?! or discussed else where)

Do you know where the mask/helmet went after it left your hands? Did it go directly for painting? or did it take another path?

Again... Thank you for making the face of the best villain of all time! :bow

I'm glad you're enjoying the information on the thread. :)

When I finished the Darth Vader sculpt in clay it was then passed onto plasterers in the small plaster shop set up in the Art department (which had been set up just to mould and cast the characters).

Brian I recall you mentioning that you were actually onset when Vader was on the Death Star, which is amazing and I'm sure will generate a lot more questions. I was curious if you were able to see the screen helmet up close when Dave Prowse was being dressed in the costume onset? I ask this because sometimes Dave would be in costume but without the helmet during rehersals of a scene. Did you get a look inside the mask?

Thomas

With any filming on set you have to be discreet when watching and therefore always at a distance trying not to be noticed. So I would not have got close enough to see inside the mask.

The standbys are the only tradesmen that are on set legitimately just in case something has to be changed.

YES... I finally remembered one of my questions!!! :lol However, it's about the chest armor and not the helmet... so, I should probably start a new thread about it, unless it's okay to ask it here?

Okay... uh... I have a question. :toothy

Brian,

You shared a picture somewhere here on the Den a short while back that you had a life cast of Dave Prowse to sculpt Vader on.

Was the helmet and the chest armor (and shoulders) sculpted on the same life cast or separate lifecasts?

Depending on your answer, I have some follow-up questions.

Thank you, sir!!

Cool. Thanks for that.

Well, the question is regarding the U-shaped indentations on the two bars on either side of the raised center. In some A New Hope photos it appears as if there are faint lines continuing from the clear U and trailing up the armor.

I did a simple mock-up of what I'm thinking, the red lines exaggerating the faint lines that appears to be present, or could possibly just be caused by the way the armor was painted, though thought I'd ask.

Jesper, JRX, was the one who I believe first suggested the lines of the U shape may extend further up the armor, though, only on the ANH.

Hi Mac,

I had a head and chest cast in plaster to sculpt the mask and helmet and a seperate full body cast to the neck for the armour and shin guards.

Hi NHM,

The lines would have extended through to the top - I think the lighting is hiding the lines to a certain extent. As you get to the top you can see the line reappear where the lighting isn't quite so strong.

Brian

Having looked again the lines do not extend to the top

Wonderful, thank you, sir!

So as the mask and the armor were sculpted separately, was the intent for the neck of the mask to be able to cover the armor's neck opening completely or just partially (front)?

There's some follow-up questions to that too, depending on the response!
