Hi All,

I found these pictures of the storm trooper helmet molds over at your props.com. Taken by Treehead when AA let him look around his workshop.

According to Andrew they are the original molds he used in 1976. I have seen some photos of pulls taken off these before triming and they fit the molds not so big undercut well, which is strange given tha the originals had a bigger undercut. I guess they could be the molds he made for the hero helmets but wouldnt the original molds have a bigger under cut than this? They look old maybe they are the real thing.

I am not the biggest trooper expert so let me know what your opinions are, has anyone else seen these, jez maybe?

Cheers

That back and cap look really smashed.

Though... to me it seems that there is the undercut needed under the tubes for exact pulls... however, I'm no expert, so I can't tell for sure.

Interesting pictures though.

I managed to see the pics briefly before the site was pulled.

Only really got a chance to look at the face and it cant be the original 1976 mould - but also cant be the same moulds they used for the Stunt or hero helmets - making me believe theyre the Battle Spec helmet Moulds.

I think a number of people managed to grab the pics before it was pulled but probably understandably no one wants to host them!

Cheers

Jez

Hey Jez,

Why dont you think they are the moulds being used for the current sds helmets, they look like they could be. Wasnt the battle spec suposed to be cnc machined or something according to the web site.

No they dont look like they are original moulds, they look like they are casts from a helmet, but which one?

Jez,

Any idea what those bucks are made of? I wonder what the effect is of repeated pulls on certain materials.

The whiter patches suggest area that were repaired.

Guys - there was a big discusion over at the RPF which is probably worth looking at. My view is

1) Theyre NOT the origional 1976 moulds (clearly)
2) The're not the moulds AA used to made the Stunt or Hero helmet's since they miss a number of significant differences

This suggests to me they're some kind of new production buck he's created for the battle spec helmet.

No idea from those pics what the makeup is, resin? (an odd choice for production mould I know)

Cheers

Jez

I believe they were the Battle Spec moulds. I also visited that day.

The make up of the mould was resin with some metallic powder mixed in, it's the same stuff he's seen taking an angle grinder to in the DVD he made.

So Matt / T*E recently said that the bumpy caps were due to the mold forming bubbles if not allowed to cool in between consecutive vac forming.

The images are small and low-res but I'm wondering if anyone sees bubbles.

And if not, perhaps the bubbles are not a permanent phenomenon?

T*E, could you comment? Thanks in advance.

It could be the reverse... what if the yellowish white areas were the original mold and all the greyish white areas were the repaired? Now that's a thought! :toothy

The reason for this would be trapped air pockets in the buck, when heated the air expands and pushes outward thus creating a lump/bump... The uneven heating of the buck can also cause the material it's made of to expand and contract at different rates also causing deformation... It's temporary to a point, and if addressed could be corrected, but if pushed those areas of the buck will start to degrade apart making it a permanent defect...

Anyway as Jez has stated, those are almost certainly NOT original bucks, so there is really no reason to analyze them...

hmmm there are differences but every time when I see the SDS molds it reminds me to the molds in the posession of Robert William Greenyer.
Over the left eye is a damage or airbubble which is on both.
