Well... it's called Sct. Hans... and you celebrate it by lighting a big bonfire and burn witches made of wood and straw and old clothes, to send them back to Salem.

Basically some medieval kinda celebration kinda thing to honor the church torturing and burning women at the stake. It was fun enough when you were a kid and didn't know any better... made the wood-witch, watched it burn, grilled some sausages and bread over the fires and had fun with the other kids. Not really as fun when you learn the history behind it... which is kinda why I'm not out celebrating tonight.

Basically... I don't much care to honor any of the celebrations here... I figure they are mostly a waste of time. But that's just me. Christmas and birthdays are pretty much some of the only things that make sense to me... but hey... I never said I was normal! :lol

We have an effigy burning celebration in the UK too Guy Fawkes night Guy Fawkes was a kind of olden times terrorist 16 or 17th century i think my historical dates knowledge is poor.
The basic story is he tried to blow up parliament and got caught so on November 5th each year we have big bonfires with effigys on let off lots of fireworks and eat junk food etc.
Any other countries partake of these kind of pyromaniac celebrations ?

While we are on the subject of burning people, i always thought that in Star Wars when they burned the dead jedi or sith that was a bit like the ancient norse tradition of burning their dead leaders on a funural boat, so even lucas wanted to get in on the act.....

So did this tradition start in scandinadian countries?

It is also an Asian tradition... which is what was used as inspiration for the Jedi - the burning of the dead to purify their soul from their flesh, iirc.

Thought you were German. That explains your Danish flag avatar at the RPF.

Up in the NewEngland states they had witch hunts as well. Salem is probably the best known for this practice.

I find it facinating how wide spread such beliefs were...I also find it fascinating that as stupid as mankind is now....we used to be even more dangerously stupid....can't believe we've survived this long as a species.
