Seems a dumb question.

looking at the dome it looks a simple gloss black, but is it?

IMO it may be satin or matt black with clear coat that gives it that appearence of gloss. It seems less shiny etc..than ROTJ but perhaps not?

Or is it infact the obvious, which is gloss black with clear coat?

I really need to get it correct as I don't want the dome to lose any detail. I'm pretty sure the ESB helmets I have are not a gloss black under that clear coat but it's hard to tell as they look really alike.

I'm Just being fussy but I would appreciate any input. Thanks.

In the ones I have painted I have always used gloss black and a clear coat but a flat is fine as typically I sand that last coat of black really well so its very flat and scratched by the time I add the clear. The clear covers all that and you just see the black color.
The hard thing with a spray can is getting a nice even coat of clear.
i have found that several light coats will build it up well and them you can polish it well after its dried a few days and you can get it to shine like a new car. ;)

Excellent, Thank you.

So either gloss dulled down with sandpaper or flat black is fine.
Why not just use flat black to save the hassle?

So ESB is not gloss black with clearcoat then? That's what I thought but wanted to be sure.

For the supposedly original paint used in ESB and RotJ : Vader Color by Valspar

I have some more info on my home computer, so I'll post that when I get home later today.

IS 2 two cans of the black pearl enough to do the mask?
NHM , would you get the black base paint from the kustom kolors rage so it goes with the black pearl?(and also their clear coat?)

I don't know if two are enough... though... I kinda think so... with even some to spare.

No, I will not get the basecoat and clearcoat, as the originals wasn't clearcoated. I will find a gloss black paint from one of their other lines.

Paul,

From the looks of it I would say that the ANH helmet was sprayed gloss black, sanded with a fine glasspaper then buffed back to a shine with wax/polish. I tried this on a scrap plastic hemisphere using gloss black paint on one side and matt on the other - both ended up with a shine but the gloss side still looked darker. The matt side shone with a gleam but looked a bit more dark greyish.

As for ESB I wouldn't be suprised if at least one helmet was sprayed with a clear laquer, even if only one coat, as I've seen the ripply almost 'orange-peel' texture in an HD screencap - it it were rubbed down smooth and polished you probably wouldn't get this. I'm told the Paul Allen stunt helmet is lacquered (as it's peeling away from the black in places) and if the helmets were all painted by the same people at the same time.... ?

The Jedi helmets definantly look like they were rubbed down and polished to me.

Jeremy

I bought from Red Frog Hobbies - Kustom Kolor.

Haven't tried it yet, though, sorry. I think CSMaclaren has made some paint tests with the Valspar/Kustom Kolor black pearl.

With later research it has been doubted whether they provided paint for the OT Vaders. Nothing confirmed yet.

There is a big difference between how something appears on film versus how something appears in an exhibit. We hope that the exhibit Vaders were painted with the same paint. The photos you see -- and the brightness of the metallic gray highlights -- will depend on the intensity and proximity of the camera flash.

How it appears on the film will vary from scene to scene. It could have been very bright in the restoration chamber (white background) but don't forget the post production video editing -- as well as the brightness/contrast ratio of your own television or flatpanel display.

The problem is, we've never seen a scene of Vader under natural light. Also, home-based lighting can hardly approximate the lights used on the set, as well as how they lit the set.

Here is a DP DLX original mask under kitchen lighting comprised of 2 long fluorescent tubes behind a grid-like sheet that does some diffusing. The cabinets and wall are white.

Image

The Black Pearl paint will help achieve this effect. The screen look appears to be slightly brighter, but I have no evidence that Don Post used the exact same paint mix. It's possible LFL brightened Black Pearl, but then it's possible to light the Vader to achieve the same effect.

Painting vs. lighting.

Lighting vs. painting.

Gosh, I'd love to ping the LFL prop people on this.

:lol Wow alot has changed in the year since I posted that.

I went on a very long journey to get a match to the original's paint. It took me 4 months of research through trial and error.

As for the paint scheme's I think it's been covered in depth since this thread.
