Right, the weather is finally getting a bit warmer and the evenings lighter so I can start using my workshop again.
I'm going to have a go at sculpting a Vader mask and helmet (dome? lid? what's the correct terminology here?). The research I've so far got together is leading me down the ESB route so the plan is to go with the flow for my first sculpt. Once I've got used to sculpting (I've never done it before) I'll then start looking at my dream of re-creating the ANH Vader.
Advice recieved (thanks Mac) has pointed me to use Klean Klay so I purchased a 1lb sample just to see what the stuff feels like. I've been playing with it and so far have managed to make a highly accurate 1:1 model Potato
and a couple of small figures - just to practice. I have also made myself a large turntable (about 2 feet across) that I can set the model on whilst I work. My next task is to make some sort of armature before I can start work with the Klay.
I'd be grateful if people could provide some info to help me on my way though...
1 Parts of the armature will be made out of MDF. Will I need to seal it before I put the Klay on top? If so, any suggestions as to what I seal it with? My first instinct would be to use a Polyurethane Gloss Varnish like this
http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Paintin ... 006/p30165 since it's what I use to seal plugs when I'm doing fibre glass work.
2 Can someone please recommend a suitable amount of Klay to buy for this project? My current plan is the sculpt the mask then cast it and reuse the Klay for the hemet (working on the newly cast mask). I'm thinking aroung 8 - 10 lbs of the stuff will do but it'd be nice if someone could confirm this.
Finally if I've completly got the wrong end of the stick from my reading and all my plans are complete rubbish, please do correct me.
Thanks
Jon
