I began posting pics of Quasimodo V2 ANH - painted and polished beautifully by Bookface - on my "Sculpting Vader" FB page back in December of last year. Between me and Bookface, our personal bar is to make the character believable. Darth Vader is such a potent character, and those of us who remember seeing him for the first time on the big screen back in 1977, well, we've never been the same since!
The Rogue One iteration of Darth Vader wasn't well-received by everyone in the prop community - I understand why - and some of the already-discussed reasons ranging from set lighting to how the armor fit the actor awkwardly while simultaneously not working symbiotically with the helmet (making the neck lip stick out and is seen against bright light).
We did this as an emotion study to see if the same vibe that people get from our Original Trilogy iterations of Quasimodo could still come across - but with a Rogue One style paint scheme. There are some parallels with the "Chronicles" photoshoot - a time when the screen-used ANH was repainted, and the photos were of a pinkish background, and the lenses looked black. In Rogue One, they were redder than we remembered for ANH, and overall, the looks is pristine and cleaner than I'm used to for a helmet of ANH configuration. In the past, each iteration of Quasimodo's paint was very carefully discussed, especially ANH. Being that I view Quasimodo very personally as my sculpture, if a paint scheme produced a result that ran contrary to the artistic vision for it, I'd find it painful.
We took minor liberties to it - we went by "feel" as opposed to absolute prop accuracy. We didn't do reveal-style upper tubes to our R1 interpretation.
So here they are. Please enjoy. Kudos to Bookface for always aiming higher - his artful treatment of my work has made me regard the character with awe again.
