Hi !

I'm sorry to create a new topic to ask about something most of you guys know ... :pale :conf

Can anyone tell me how is the dome mount inside the ANH Dome ?
I know for ESB & ROTJ that you have a male plug on the mask and a female inside de dome, but I can't figure it out for the ANH.
Ok there are the 3M Tabs on the mask, there should be 3 others inside the dome, but what makes it sit "properly" ?

:Posting a TD facemask showing the 3M Tabs to make the post look "attractive" :lol :

The 3m tabs act like weak Velcro. The tabs on the inside of the dome and the tabs on the face mask interlock. Since there is no male piece fitting into a female piece we see a lot more play in the dome positioning in ANH than we see in any of the other 2 films.

Isn't there a big gap between the tabs on the mask and the ones in the dome ? I mean, the plug on the ESB has a certain height. Does the interior of dome have a specific form?

I’m sure I’ve seen a photo online sometime showing the inside of an ANH dome that had what looked like a spacer of some sort on which the corresponding tabs were mounted.

I only have the interior of the MP dome :/

Also, why are there 5 tabs inside the RickBaker mask mold whereas there are only 3 on the true ANH mask ?

The only photographic reference we currently have is of the "Movie Poster" helmet:

recently-found-anh-vader-vt2025.html

You can see the use of wooden blocks to help position the dome. This is what I reference whenever I have finished any domes. It's a complete pain and requires custom fitting of each part -- but if you want accurate you gotta do what you gotta do, lol. While we don't have any reference to the screen used dome (assuming the MP isn't the screen used dome) it's a pretty good bet that this is exactly the method they used. You can see in the "dressing" footage when they place the dome over Prowse's head that they let it slide down into position which, to my mind, implies the presence of the cross-bar you see inside the Movie Poster dome. The cross bar acts not only as a location tool but helps prevent the dome from swinging forward.

Technically ALL of the screen used helmet castings have 5 tab placement locations. Or they should -- the TM and TD do. Ultimately they used 3 tabs to hold the dome in place but my guess is that they started with 2 tabs and found that it didn't hold well enough so they switched to 3 leaving the empty location holes in between.

The perfect spacing for all 5 tabs suggest to me they started with 5 and then went down to 3, likely because, the more of the tabs used on a curved surface the more easily the dome would pop off the mount and fall off, or it was harder to snap it into place.

If they started with 2 and went up to three, then they would likely have overlapped the 3 new tabs over the previous 2's position, but there is no overlap at all.

I also believe there is picture reference from the RotJ funeral pyre helmet which is a similar helmet to the MP helmet.

Btw: Dave, your link doesn't work. :)

I was thinking that they may have started with 5 then went down to three as well but, to my mind, it made more sense the other way around -- but your argument works even better! I can completely see 5 tabs getting in the way when trying to snap them down into place -- it's hard enough with three.

Not sure what the deal with the link is. I've tried half a dozen times to edit it and the forum keeps changing it when it posts.

I'd forgotten about the Funeral Pyre helmet. Here's a link that also won't work, to that thread:

Nah, the funeral pyre link works. I'll contact support about that other link. Can you e-mail me the actual link to no.humor.man@webspeed.dk. so I can forward it?

Here is another theory about the 5 tabs. Perhaps they used 2 tabs to attach the original fiberglass back half of the head to the faceplate and 3 tabs to attach the dome to the faceplate?A wooden spacer with screwed-on tabs in the dome makes sense. I‘ve seen a wooden spacer with a metal latch on a Rick Baker ANH touring dome in the archives back in 1995. I also remember hearing a story about the screen used ANH dome, according to one source the top portion of the dome was almost filled with polyester and the tabs were screwed directly into the polyester, which made the dome pretty top-heavy.

I'm glad I asked ^^
I thought it was something "clear" since there are replicas which feature the tabs and a dome mount that fits with the tabs (thinking of gino's and spfx's)
Your theories are pretty solid !

And that picture probably shows how the damage on the cheek happened. It was Lambotour who made that suggestion. :)
