Hi dear Troopers fans (and others)

Some weeks ago, I had a good talk with a private collector who allowed me to post these pictures he provided to me!

For the back story he told me, his brother and him have this helmet since their childhood. Their father worked for an international plastic compagny and received this helmet as a gift (in the 80's)

The boys played with it, it's why one ears is missing (and certainly the same thing for the piece of plastic which is supposed to fix the lens on the inside). According to the owner of this helmet, this one never had decals of the rear pill box (despite the little hole which seems to show that something was fixed on this area).

It's funny to see that this helmet is more a part of family history than a relica or something like that in a collection.

Enjoy the pics!

Very cool! I would have loved a toy like that growing up.
It may be an original prop but we should always keep in mind it's basically the same as any other plastic toy mask. Just way cooler.

Do you think he would want a replacement ear for it?

Pretty neat! I had to pull out my 1997 Classic Action TIE fighter helmet to compare. The obvious difference is mine is one piece made of vinyl with screws only simulating how the multiple pieces would attach in an original helmet. The inside view of mine is the wavy unfinished vinyl whereas the one depicted here has sharper features. I presume the original was made of ABS - could you tell what the material was for this one? Here's a good reference which includes a link to a video of a presumed original TIE fighter helmet: http://www.starwarshelmets.com/original-TIE-Pilot-helmet.htm

Well, with laserscanning, there wouldn't be any risk of damaging the piece as with molding. And you would be able to print full scale as well as any other scale of interest. Definitely an option.

Though, definitely let the owner know to keep hold of that precious possession.

3D scanning is great, but as an hardcore fan, a vacuumformed helmet would be so authentic ^^

I hope that one day he will convice his brother to cast the helmet! He really liked the idea to make replicas, but not his brother, which is affraid that this souvenir could be destroyed. What I respect (even if it's not risky!)

Well, if you scan it both on the inside as well as the outside - which is possible with some scanners (but of course there will be blank spots, though, you can then fix the digital sculpt at the areas that wasn't possible to scan on the inside with approximations from the outside part of the scan) - you can make an inverted print, where you basically print it as vac-form molds.

Scanning is definitely the better option if he's afraid to take it apart for vac-form molding.

Beautiful helmet. Definitely production made or at least a direct copy of a production helmet - it has so many things on it that can only be found on a screen helmet.

I have sent you a PM - I have all the parts (all original items not replicas) that would complete that helmet. Apart from the missing ear that would be a replica but I have a copy of a screen one :)

If you get back to me or let the owner know I could help him out if he wanted to restore it a bit without any real hassle - that helmet deserves a wee spruce up :)

Would love to see a replica which would look like this one.
Great find and a nice piece of history.

WOW. what an awesome prop and story.
i have a question, was the Tie fighter pilots helmets made our of the stunt trooper helmets or the hero trooper helmets?
because this looks to be a hero. i only ask cause my knowledge of these props is very minimal.
