Post subject:  My Rubies Helmet Mod - WIP

Hi all, been lurking for weeks and thought I'd share my Rubies Mod here. Hopefully I can get some feedback and guidance from all the experts here.

Stock helmet with some dome repositioning.

Managed to get it tilted quite far back but will need to cut the female receptor on the dome to move the dome back a bit more.

I used SCA lightweight filler (Aussie version of Bondo?) for the dome. I took off a half mm from each side of the centre ridge with a dremel.

Here are the face mods- I used standard Milliput

Here are the lenses I will be using. $5 from a "2 dollar" shop.

I'm hoping they will look darker after installation....

It's definitely worth doing. I learned a lot doing mine.

Looking good!

But remember that the dome shouldnt be perfect in symmetry, because it was the same in the movies.

some progress... lots of sanding!

face coming along- the nose bridge slots are a little high, but I think I'll leave them
Image

can't believe how skewed by centre ridge is, I'll need to straighten it when I build up the ridge.
Image

Any ideas on how to build the centre ridge?
Any comments on what else I should do at this stage?

I need to ask you. Are you going for replicating accurate details and shapes or are you going for an idealized, cleaned up, corrected look? If the first I have a few suggestions.

All the build-up on the whole side on the back skirt is completely unnecessary as the shape there was pretty accurate in regards to how uneven the skirts are compared to each side.

The slight curve to the ridge isn't a flaw - that's how it actually is, so you wouldn't want to straighten that, as that will just make the dome look weird when you put it on the mask. You can file the sides to give it a more square look and then you can file the front curved plane a little flatter. If you want to build up the sides to match the height of the center of the curve on the ridge, I would suggest using Aves Apoxie Sculpt.

thanks for the advice.

so are you saying that the curve here on the left back of the dome is supposed to be there?

This is how it looks on the eFX ANH helmet. Hope it's okay to post this here, Jez.

Take a picture of your Rubies dome in the same position as the eFX above and post it here. You'll then be able to compare the two directly and see if anything needs altering.

I knew there was a little dip on the left side, but the Rubies dip was, to my eye, a little too deep... Unfortunately I haven't got any other views of the back of the dome.

Where in the world are you located? I've been using something called Loctite Technology Plastic Padding Elastic Super Spackel. Just mix it and apply it on the whole surface - work quickly - let it harden, then start gently sanding with a high grit sandpaper until smooth. I't's what I used to fix my damaged dome and after priming, you couldn't see that the surface had ever been damaged or that repairs had been made.

I'm in Australia. Is the loctite anything like Bondo? Is it a polyester resin type filler? I'll go to my hardware shop and have a look.
