Hello all,

I'm toying with the idea of using my VP faceplate as a basis for a ROTJ Vader helmet.
What I would really like to know is whether the Vader helmet on the Visual Dictionary is a genuine screen used or a promo helmet.
I have a very early DP deluxe dome with a really nice shape - it's number 73 according to the brass plate but it's marked as 35 under the paint.
The centre strip is exactly the same as the one on the dictionary cover, almost the same definition.

Opinions please!

ROTJ Vader is not my forte but it may be so.

The DP would also form a good (if not a bit of a "soft" in some areas) naturally for ROTJ as that is what it resembles most.

Here's a better pic of that vader for discussion. I would venture to say it is not screenused as it appears too soft, both faceplate and dome, however; I am not an ROTJ guy.

For whatever it is worth, Don Bies told me WAAAAY back that this was screenused. Curious, is it the same helmet seen in the Smithsonian Magazine coverage of the LFL archives? If so, 'tis screen used.

Cheers DJ,

Looks like the Smithsonian to me...

Is that the one that Don Bies points out in the archives on the table (sitting next to a snowtrooper and TK helmet) or another video? That one he points out on the table is not the same as this one.

That's weird you mention that as I watched that video on Saturday.

Thomas I think it's this one you mean, This was the one that is incorrectly labled ROTJ on Jez's site that featured in the video. Bies got it right when he mentioned ESB. well apart from mesh and some other details. Dome is definately ESB.

The other one to feature in the achives presentation is this ROTJ.

No, don't remember Don pointing to a table, etc. but wonder - might it not be the ROTJ helmet that is sitting on the platform alongside the ANH helmet in that two-shot with camera flash? Anyone's opinion on this?

I know this was posted almost 6 years ago, but I never saw a definitive answer posted.
So I'm gonna answer it. The answer is YES. It is screen used.
It is the first helmet seen in Return of the Jedi. It is also used in the hanger scene when
the Emperor arrives. It is also used in the scene, 'Where is that shuttle going?...

In a B&W image that has been lightened up, there is three spots of glue(?) visible at the top of the left eye lens, as well as
a chip in the dome next to center strip (circled in red.) These can be seen in the right image below. This helmet has an extra
large blended cheek compared to the rest of the ROTJ helmets. This extra large blended cheek/nose can clearly be seen in the
left image screen shot. Note: Other ROTJ helmets have the blended cheek/nose, but, the blended area is not as wide on any other
helmet. There is also other aspects of this helmet that are specific to the other ROTJ helmet that are an exception to this helmet
as it appears on screen.

Well spotted! I see no flaws in your analysis. :thumbsup

What is blended cheek mean?

And this too I think is the same helmet as used in that smithsonian article Fromm 1990 or so.

Which means it would also be the same helmet u see sitting on the archives shelf in that photo next to an any era helmet.

Blended cheek, I would assume is the cheeks sanded down out near the nose - so you don't get that bend near the tip, but rather you get a wide, continuous flow of the cheek all the way out to the edge of the nose tip instead of stopping a bit further back, like seen on oversanded or some licensed helmets like the Rubies.

That is what I mean. However, the blended area is usually built up or added.

Image

I am referring to the left (or black) cheekbone, seems unusually large on this helmet, due to the fact that the main apex (there is a
small apex directly on the side of the nose close to its skip also) of the arch of the cheekbone starts much further from the nose, as if
they where trying to do a more seamless flow from the face of the cheek to the side of the nose. Where on the other helmets in the film
they just blend the area were the cheekbone meets the side of the nose.

Image

As a note, there is a lot of other things that tie these helmets together, I will go into explanation here if I have to, but it's all part
of a thread that I'm working on about the ROTJ helmets and it will be a lot more clear there.

Great topic & thread. I've wondered about the nose & how it came about.
Looking forward to your new thread DO.
