Post subject:  Krylon Sucks? Any paint pro's have an opinion?

I tested the sheen difference between Krylon H20 Latex spray black and Rustoleum professional gloss black today. IMO I think the Rustoleum outshines the Krylon easily. I have heard that the Krylon is a great gloss and highly recommended for vaders. Am I missing something? Not only was it duller it was runny too. Anyone care to comment on this? I am working on a TE2 stealthtrooper helmet for a FISD friend and Its got to be damn near perfect.

Krylon H20 is a water based latex paint. While being a plastic based paint that has some gloss when it dries, thats not the way to get your gloss.

Gloss is achieved in several different ways and usually a combination of them.

Deep rich colors that are buffed smooth will bring out the brilliance and luster as well as a gloss clear coat. If you want a good sprayable paint that goes down smooth it involves your prep work and the paint. Wet sand it smooth all the way up to 2000 grit if possible, some say thats not needed, but I like it. Then get a good paint, SEMS and Duplicolor make sprays that go down very fine and paint in light coats, not big fat wet coats, that will cause runs.

Hope this helps, Im sure other will chime in with other solutions as well.

For what its worth, I dont like Krylon and Rustoleum paints and use them as sparingly as possible. They are made for home use on basic "give it a color" home projects, IMHO.

Since you are painting plastic for a Stealthtrooper, I would use SEMS. You find it at an autobody store, like Sherman-Williams Autobody and they are made especially for plastic adhesion. Get some Plastic Adhesion promoter, Your gloss black and a gloss overcoat, they all spray extremely fine, setup nicely, made to flex!, and work beautifully together and on plastic.

I've had bad luck with Krylon H2O Latex. Some slight flex caused cracking.

I hear good things about Rustoleum.

Somehow a rumor started that Krylon H20 was the best gloss as far as black in concerned. I used the Rustoleum professional black after a side by side test showed that it outshined Krylon easily.

This is 2 coats. I will wet sand out any imperfections and polish it up.

What kind of investment would be needed to shoot the SEMS? I have a 20 gallon compressor. I guess I would need a small gravity fed sprayer. I am not sure what else beyond that though.... Can you post pics or provide links to what is needed and how to prepare the paint? Also what to do for the final gloss and what products to use to do it? I hope I am not bombarding you with questions... I notice you seem to have some experience with this stuff..

You "will" sand the paint job? Dang, that looks great even without sanding! :eek :thumbsup

Several Vaders on another prop forum swear by the H20, but your results speaks for itself. :salut

Not really fancying these "mirror" colors. Too reflective of everything else and not showing off the real color, imo.

I like the paint job, though smooth, the orange peel really gives it a nice rough look.

Sorry, wasn't meant to sound like a slam against your work or what you like for the surface finish. I'm the elephant in the china store.

for plastic models I like Krylon Fusion.. This shit is tuff as nails
and it hand buffs pretty good, and believe me once it's cured
it has no residual smell and its very resistant to chips..

SEMS comes in rattle cans too, not just for air guns. Most Shermin Williams have a whole rack of a branded SEMS display, with plenty of colors.

Krylon Fusion is ok, but it doesnt spray clean to me.
