Post subject:  Newcomer to Mold Making -- HELP! (Vader chestbox)

Now that I have all the measurements and drawings done for my ANH Vader chestbox, I want to make a form(sculpt) and then make a silicone mold and make fiberglass copy. I have never done anything like this so I need lots of advice, help, links, tuts, etc.

Best products to use for the original form(sculpt), silicone, release agent, fiberglass, etc.?

BTW, I'm going to want to do two versions idealized and wonky screen accurate.

Doug,
The best advice I can give is patients.. I'm the type of person who likes
to get stuff done super fast (without compromising the work of course)
, But with silicone, time is the key otherwise you'll just waist a lot of money..

Go to Youtube.com and do a search for Silicone Mould, or Mould Making Ect, Ect.
There's usually some really good tutorials on anything and everything..

As far as products go.. I use Smooth-on.com products and have never had
an issue.. Even last week when I thought I screwed up a Mould because of
a mechanical issue with a vacuume degasser I still managed to get a perfect
Mould without degassing (removing the air in the silicone by means of a vacuume chamber)
the silicone

Check out some vids and If you still have some questions give me a PM and
I'll help ya out.. :)

I realize that this topic is quite a few years old, but felt that as a new member that I have a smidgeon of info to add for others looking to get into mold making.

Other than the already given advice, I recommend picking up a copy of

"The Prop Builders Molding and Casting Handbook"
ISBN-13 978-0-55870-128-1
ISBN- 10 1-55870-128-1

It's $19.99 US, it has a ton of info in the book on the different types of materials, molding, and walks you through them. It's a fantastic starting point for anyone looking to get into making their own molds and learning the basics, Especially when it comes to what type of mold to use for what ever it is your trying to mold.
