So the tour domes were actually black vac-formed styrene?

That is interesting. Must have been very awkward to wear with nothing to balance the weight of the faceplate. Unless the faces were cast very very thin.

Still a very interesting read none the less. Thanks for posting that!

I very much doubt a 25 year old silicone mould would be usable.
Silicone becomes brittle after a certain period of time.

My friend Ian made a full size R2, all the moulds were GE silicone.
He made one cast out of the moulds and put them into storage.
When he went to use the mould again he went to line it up in the Fibreglass case and piece literally just tore out.
Now you can easily tear pieces of the rubber out with your fingers.

The oils in the rubber dissipate over time.

Depends on what type of casting material u use, how many castings you pull, how it was stored and most importand: release agents.

Silicone doesn't need release agents when casting things out of it but laminating resin (polyester) is very aggressive and can literally bite into the silicone after a time, if no release agents are used to protect the silicone.

Was it tin cure? platinum silicone? urethane mold? I don't know

Seeing as we now know that the 30+ year old Rick Baker mold is still usable after all this time... it brings things into perspective.

Darth Jones can correct me if I am wrong but the Rick Baker mold wasn't made out of silicone...

Drinking this moment. Reading words.

I like our alphabet. Its not all backwards like the Russian one.

But that mold was in something I was TOLD was called "adrubber" though I don't know what that is. It is a dark red rubber and maybe about only a quarter inch thick or so all around - it was painted on the hero ANH Vader and then a thin plaster backing was put over that.

A nice lightweight piece but thin.
