Don't know a particular brand of paint, but you should go after something that's called Khaki - and in UK it seems to be a bit different color than how the rest of the world views Khaki colors. You are looking for a pale greenish brown, iirc.

I used a Rover Champagne colour from Halfords which was pretty good.

The closest HDPE we have here in the UK right now is called Beige-Grey. There is a Beige-Grey Plastikote Satin spray paint which is a good match to this colour.

Thanks for the replies. I've looked through a couple different khaki's but the colors seem different.

I'm in the US, so does anyone have a recomendation for a US paint.

I believe the favorite in the states in Krylon Fusion River Rock Satin.

Its not perfect but I dont think you will find anything much closer in a spray paint over here.

But then again, I've not looked that hard.

The colour of the HDPE screen-used stormtrooper helmet I saw in person at the Sci-Fi museum in Seattle was light grey with a slight hint of green in it. I am positive their was no beige in it because I looked at and scrutinized that helmet for over an hour. Yup, other attendees thought I was nuts or something, "Why is that guy staring at that helmet, is he okay?"

It was the screen ID'd helmet from 'Empire' with the Star Wars patch on the back.

Gundam

That HDPE is a bit too dark IMO.

Here's my first attempt, which is a little light, somewhere in between would be better.

Nevermind paint i would like a consensus on what colour the HDPE was some say khaki others say beige others grey three completely different colours and really not difficult to distinguish between them.
So were different colours used on the originals ?
Personally i'm leaning toward khaki just because that's the colour Jez says it is and i don't know anyone else myself that has seen as many examples in the flesh.( i hope you aren't colourblind Jez) :lol

Well, I have to say i have not seen as many real helmets as Jez, but I swear the one I saw at the Sci-Fi museum was light gray with a hint of green in it. Not to brag or anything but I am pretty good with recognizing and matching paint colour by eye. So I don't think my eye was 'out'.

I think using the term 'khaki' for a colour confuses the issue, it means a lot of different things to different people. To some khaki is like a green colour and to others it is like a sandy beige colour and to others still khakis means a pair of pants. To me khaki is a brown/ green colour. To more accurately describe a colour I would say it is a gray green colour or a brown with green etc. The first colour being the dominant hue and the second colour being the tertiary colour or whatever. problem is there are a lot of complex colours that are made up of a bunch of different colours that are hard to describe.

Just my 2 cents anyway.

For me as a Brit, khaki i would describe as a grey/green (we spell grey properly :blah ) i've only seen pictures myself but that's the colour i see not a sandy or beige colour (we spell colour correctly too :toothy)

That's why i'm confused because grey/green is easy to distinguish from sandy/beige so i'm wondering why some people lean toward the beige colour even Paul/TM who is British and i assume khaki means the same to him as it does to me.
That's why i was wondering if there were different colour materials used on the originals.

I recall Jez posting some pictures of various helmets in relation to the HDPE colour before i think it might have been on the RPF in relation to the HDPE T*E used on his replicas and they all seemed to fit in with what i call khaki.
I've not seen any that i would describe as beige though if someone has some i'd like to see it if possible.

I like HDPE, but not all helmets in ANH were made of HDPE. Using ABS is just as accurate as using HDPE.

Sorry, I didn't spell 'grey' correctly, but I did get 'colour' right. :thumbsup
