Hi,

Noobie member here. Just wated to say how much I've enjoyed reading through the progress of this piece (and your Stormtrooper). You have an amazing talent that has inspired me to stop dreaming about making a Vader mask and get off my rear end and do it.

Thanks, Nikon! I appreciate the words a lot!

My advice would be to start with oil based clay. I used Klean Klay, which does not contain sulphur, as that would cause molding compounds to not cure, should I ever need to mold my work.

I would encourage people to NOT try to get a Rubie's plastic helmet and to make modifications. I started down that path, and now that I look back, I now feel that the road I traveled took longer, trying to figure out ways to rework very stubborn material when all that time I could have developed more as an artist. Same goes for fiberglass - if you want a starting helmet, chose the best you can buy. Don't get some eBay piece of trash that will cause you countless hours of rework.

Clay is really the ultimate sculpting medium. It translates your artistic vision and makes it 3D - physically and instantly. The challenge then is not the material but your own skill. I hope that makes sense. I learned the ahrd way. I hate to say this, but the mask - even in its current tubeless and teethless state - took a few days, whereas my "Quasi" project has taken two and a half years.

As my Vader projects come to a close, new projects will hopefully be oil based clay, moving forward. :thumbsup

Well, it's getting lighter in the evenings here so I'm certainly starting to think about spring if that helps.

Can't wait for the next update (and pics) of this thread.

I'm glad I took a break from this, as resculpting the helmet for Goldie and Quasimodo has helped me develop a better eye for the Vader helmet/dome, and now I can see what I need to do in order to make the ClayNH helmet more accurate.

More later. Will probably resume in a few months.

Thank you for your patience. Not emotionally and psychologically prepped yet to mold the thing....

I'd have to do it myself since shipping soft clay to someone with such skills will risk damaging the sculpt. I have to do this on my own.
