Have a question for the experts out there. Black details on the ANH Stormtrooper, chin, traps, ears ect. Is the black gloss or semi gloss? Another question are the ears on the ESB version the same color detal as the ANH? I know on the ESB frown and chin is semi gloss. One of those details I am not 100% about. Thanks

Things are going slow in the hobby right now - usual slump around these months, so replies may be slow.

I'm no expert, but I've always seen them as semi gloss.

Yeah, semi gloss has been the word on the streets. I'd tend to think that if it was different somebody would've said something by now, so I'd go with that.

Cheers,

Kraig

I use Satin Black on my helmets.

I've also started using Satin Grey too on a few I am building up and they look really good. I have yet to see concrete evidence that Gloss Grey was used. All the tube stripes look to be Matt Blue on the original helmets too.

That's really interesting TM. Now, I'm certainly not an expert on the Stormies, but I think that it's possible that both gloss and satin or even matt could've been used? The only reason I still think some were gloss is due to the photo's of the "Set for stun" on SWH...

Especially in the rear traps and tears. You can see the light reflect off the grey, but the black lines don't seem to reflect as well being satin. But the Sandtrooper's seem to be a flat or satin grey and the Brian R helmet may be too. I think that you may be right about the tube stripes too.

Again, I'm not an expert, so I could be horribly wrong...

Well... depending on the paints used, I was under the impression that only gloss and matt existed in the beginning and only later did the semi-gloss pop up, but whether that was in mid-to late seventies or even up into the eighties I have no clue. If Humbrol was used, then they would certainly know when they introduced the various types and colors. If something else was used... well... a little detective work can't harm.

Also... when using gloss paints... once dry and you rub your fingers down across them you can matt them slightly, taking some of the shine out of the paint. So just because it looks semi-gloss doesn't mean that was the type of paint applied. It could just be rubbed down gloss.

Interesting info guys thanks. Here is a quote from Gino about the Hero eFX helmet.
(Surprised he said anything about this)

"We spent a LOT of time matching the grey, black, and blue colors for this helmet. Not only in terms of color, but also the gloss level for each one (which all 3 were different)."

I do wonder if over time the gloss might be lost and so the colors look more satin or matte.

Yeah, you can't really say anything conclusive about paint applied 30 years ago + with the following rigors of filming, later storage and how it was treated since painted. For anything concrete you need a list of the actual paints used and how they were applied.

The blue and grey are gloss Humbrol paints
