Yep, I didn't want to speak for him but it was really just a rough job, nothing special, but I think that's really what it needs...

I agree. Pure perfection.

Actually I went back and looked at the DJ and the paintwork has less of the hand-brushed appearance than the recently finished SL than I remembered. The finished SL has the black coming through the silver in places like the original paint job...but still both are finely finished pieces...and the degree of reflectivity and paint tones on the DJ were always superb and always set the standard...

Hey, folks! I will say that I painted it up with spraying, not brushing. At the time I did not know that so much of it all was brushed on but, to tell you the truth, I was looking for the right "lines" on this Vader helmet. I don't think I was looking to specifically reproduce the prop so much as I was looking to reproduce how it looked on screen in 1977 (which is very different of course from how it probably looked in person).

There are some brush touchups but its mostly sprayed, both the black and metal.

One thing I did do was just paint it once, let it dry, and then lightly rub out the paint with no polishing.

There is also no clear coat or anything like that.

There is nowhere NEAR the rubbing, waxing and polishing that I have done on my other Vader helmet, the idealized one that I think is posted here somewhere.

Glad you all like it still!

Yeah, tried to locate that, but I couldn't find it, so maybe make this could be the new DJ thread with both versions and post lots of new pictures and info... if you want, of course.

Your helmet's a modern day classic DJ, really nice!

Did you spray your black paint straight from a rattle can, or did you use a spraygun/airbrush?

..(sorry I may have asked you that before, I can't remember!)

Quoted for truth.... :thumbsup

Great to hear more about how you painted it, DJ. Just one layer, huh? That would explain how it has less depth and a more used prop-like appearance. Maybe that's the key. The black probably was applied in more than one layer on the original ANH, and then the gunmetal they added afterward as an afterthought...with one layer only as a quick job that would come out as being more flat in appearance, and explain why in places you can see the black paint underneath. Just thinking out loud...

Let's not forget that the original(s) were layed down in Black Gelcoat so not a great deal of paint would have been neccessary.

Oh, hey gang -

Haven't had much free time to stay on top of threads lately. I'll try and post some refined Vader helmet pics. here too.

But the DJ was painted with just enough paint to cover the surface. And while there is primer under there I did not sand the primer when it was dry - I rather lightly used a Turtle Wax rubbing compound (red plastic container, orange-ish, brown muck) and bristle paint brush.

The paint then went on after that.

But in not brushing it on I look at it this way - the original Star Trek Enterprise we think of as white, right? But to achieve that the ship was painted a baby blue, the camera doing the rest. On the DJ I wanted it to look in person like it looked on screen in 1977 I guess.

Now, the refined Vader - this is from the DJ/ SL mold and refined without any subtraction of form - any facet that had too many waves was both built up and sanded down such that the median height of that region stayed the same. There were wood templates and all that. So I suspect that it is micro-larger than the ROTJ reveal but with as much refinement.

Okay, will try and load some refined Vader helmet photos. Wish me luck here.
