I'm very curious what else could have been used....

Gel coat comes in many colours, the most common is neutral gel coat which can have a pigment added for a colour of your choice.

Thanks Alan. I wonder if it would be something that was used on other fiberglass props in ANH (landspeeder???) ? It's been something I've been curious about.

Just a point of information. Although Brian sculpted two sides to the shoulder bells, only one is seen on the suit in ANH and in production stills...which could be why fanmade armor also has just one bell, not a sided pair.

It certainly could have been, but if the item is ultimately going to be painted it would't have to be coloured at all, pigments and coloured gel coats are more expensive than neutural.

For example here's a CT face with no gel coat:

I'd like some proof to back this up please.

Actually without seeing photographs of the original sculpt how could you know this with any certainty?

Do you have any input on this Brian?

The way I read Thomas's post ( and I'm sure he can qualify this) is that although I sculpted a left and a right shoulder bell and they were both worn only one shoulder was seen on screen.

I thought Thomas was saying they used duplicate casts of one of the shoulder bells - left or right?

Yes that's exactly how I read it.
Thomas mentioning the fan made armor only haveing one and not a sided
pair confirms it for Me..

I for one have never heard of this, and it makes no sense to sculpt a left,
and right shoulder bell, but only use one for molding, and casting..

Yes it seems odd to use only one mold for both sides.

Well, that being the case, what about the shins?

Yes thanks guys, just one of the bells is seen onscreen...I'm sure they had more than one set and by some chance they didn't realize the differences between the left and right sides that Brian sculpted...so the original suit when it got to DP studios, for example, also had two of the same side. Maybe Brian could tell us if it was the left or right side...that would be cool to know. I could dig up pics of my former GH master set or if someone is quicker to the draw by all means....

I know this is something Brian and I differ on, and I know that fiberglass shins were made because I've seen a pic of them being made, but I have heard the opinion that what Dave Prowse wore were ABS shins. I'm sure someone might be able to confirm this with Dave. At least when the suit reached DP studios they were ABS. This might even be visible onscreen...but I've not studied it in that way yet. Well it's not fact just an idea of them being ABS but it would be nice to pin down. Brian were you able to see the screen-used shins? I guess if you did that would settle the matter.

But they are clearly left and right side on the screen suit.

Thomas

If I sculpted a right and left, they moulded a right and left and cast a right and left I would be amazed to see that Dave Prowse was wearing 2 rights or 2 lefts as you suggest. I'll judge that when I see the photographic evidence from ANH screen version (not a prop makers version).
