...after checking out some High Def screen grabs of the ANH Tie pilots with the gunmetal details I've got a question...but I'm not sure anyone will know the answer..We know the gunmetal details on Vader in ANH were applied with a brush after it was discovered the all black helmet and armor did not photograph well...my question is:

Were the gunmetal details on the ANH Tie pilot helmets used in the cockpit scenes applied with a brush..and is it the same gunmetal paint used on Vader?

I think they would have wasted little time with painting such details with a spray gun and masking off all those areas. Since the Trooper helmet details were hand painted I'm fairly certain these details were hand brushed on as well. Much quicker and much easier.

Whether the grey color is the same is hard to say... though... it could be likely.

I think this may be only half the truth. All the helmets looked the same, looked bland and kinda uninteresting... just see what they did with the X-Wing helmets. Totally different in the cock-pit scenes than seen in the hangar scenes - I think they did it to spice things up a little so you could tell the individual pilot apart in the cockpit - same with the TIE helmets in the DS corridors vs in the cockpits. Maybe it started out as for highlighting effect, but then turned into something more.

Well... just speculation, but based on the X-Wing changes... it's plausible.

..I never thought of that...that make sence! with no markings you can't tell one from the other..

I agree with no NHM, it may have started to increase definition. Then to tell one TIE pilot from the other. It would explain the diffrent variations. Funny thing is I wouldn't see the Empire allowing TIE pilots to customize their helmets. I know there is speculation that the different markings may have denoted ranks.
