Hi Brian,

Do you by any chance have an idea of what the tusks on the mask were actually made from? That ones been nagging me for ever.

Other than being metal I don't know exactly which metal they used. Norman Harrison of Elstree Props claims to have made them in the metal workshop at the time. He was responsible for the lightsaber handle and a lot of the engineering work on C3P0. He could have possibly bought them in or turned them in the workshop.

Hi Bigbaddaddyvader,

Looking at your website I do remember the face!

It was a good weekend at Celebration Europe and it was good to speak to the real fans of Star Wars.

Brian, you created the Dark Lord as we know (and love)him. I know the little sketch they gave you. Well, and you did it perfectly right. Maybe it was because of your interpretation and skills that the prequels were made....(everyone waited to see the Vader YOU CREATED!)

Thanks Jodi - do you have a job in PR ?

It was a real blast and to get to thank you again for taking as much time as both yourself and John Mollo did to talk with me about your work was fantastic.I have your autograph displayed next to my Vader tusks!

Brian,
were you ever disapointed that the original Vader mask you sculpted
wouldn't be used as part of the new trilogies..

Most of us Hardcore Vader fans were for sure :(

Hi Doug,

I feel happy to have sculpted the original Darth Vader and it appears to be the one that so many fans love.

I spoke to a good friend of mine who is the last of the remaining four sculptors that worked on ESB (sculptors seem to die young in the film industry :eek ) and he stated that Vader was not resculpted for the film.
I don't know about ROTJ but I suspect the mask was cast in plaster and rounded and softened off.

Brian

Brian,

there has in the past been some debate about Vader's chest box possibly being sculpted from clay. I was curious if, as you had done the mask and armour, if you were responsible for the square
chest box shape as well?

Also, did the armour come after the mask or at the same time (to ensure a fit?)

I'm also not sure, but I think I remember you sculpted the shin guards too. Is that true?

OMG what an amazing thread!

Brian, kudos on an outstanding job, albeit 30 years later. You helped change my life as a 12 year old kid. I remember seeing a commercial for SW in the summer of '76, where Vader's head is seen briefly (the detention block scene) and I nearly peed myself...
To the best villain of all time...

Ok - sorry, Brian - a slight misunderstanding then -
I thought you might also have known what the other sculptors
involved in the project were doing, and if different designs or
sculpts were made for the same character.

I remember a scene in a making-of of Episode 2 where George
Lucas is "picking" the character sculpt for "Dexter Jettster" out
of a whole table filled with maquettes.

So I assumed that it could have been that a (small) number of
different Helmets were sculpted from wich George would have
chosen his favourites then.
I know the budget was pretty tight, but at least 2 or 3 different
Helmet sculpts for each "Helmeted Character" would've been
my guess.
