Ok, seems like a silly question I am sure, but...

I have looked at the templates, publicity pics, finished helmet pics, and I am still not sure. Are the eye sockets in the ANH helmet black, or silver, or some combination? I have seen several different versions, and in the ref pics it is ust too dark for me to tell (though I think they are black).

Thx!

Well... the consensus is that upper and lower eye sockets are black, while the area at the nose is grey.

Some have seen it all black... but never all grey, so you have two options.

Yes the original ANH helmet definitely has black on the upper and lower parts of the socket and the nosebridge front and sides is gunmetal...although the sides might have been black at some point early on, but I haven't looked into that.

That's an easy answer SL. They were as the whole helmet was painted black prior to the grey highlighting! :blah

I do believe it's black. The black will still pick up some light and can potentially be mistaken for metallic gray. The ANH look we've come to love relies on creating a shadow on the eyes so that the bottom half of the lenses are visible while the upper half of the eyes are bathed in shadow.

The ANH look is not necessarily always such that the rim partly conceals the eyes, though it's a look we've come to love thanks to the Tantive IV scene. There are various occasions in ANH where if you look carefully enough, you can just barely make out Vader's eyebrows in the shadows.

Anyways, the black of the inside upper eyelids contribute to the darkness of the upper eye area.

Hope that makes sense.

Sithlord is correct, the upper and lower insides of the lids are gloss black. The section adjacent to the nose bridge is gunmetal. Zero doubts on this one. Don't go by still photos folks, scroll thru the DVD itself. You'll be able to convince yourself. Tantive IV scenes are the best for this by the way.

Dave :)
