Does anybody have any tips as to how I could dye leather?

I have some vintage red leather that I would like to dye black.

How could that be done? by hand I mean....

I'd like to do it myself rather than send it to a proffesional.

Will it work and look good, or is the result always crappy???

Any help would be much appreciated and to be honest I haven't had time to Google it :hehe-err :slp

I have never gone back and dyed a piece that was done before. The piece may have a sealer on it that stops the leather from absorbing any new dye.
The dye from Tandy Leather is easy to use and apply to a new piece of leather, its just brushed on and it soaks into the material and then you use a sealer of the dye will rub off on everything it touches.

I would try a test on a small sample piece and see if it takes dye.

You can strip the dye that is on there now off.....and then re dye. I'm not sure how this is done exactly other than it is a liquid solution.....

I used to be friends with this lady at a motorcycle leather repair shop and thats what she did. Maybe call a leather repair place or surf the net and see if there are information sites....

Vader71 is correct, that Tandy stuff is mean........they could probably even tell you how to do the whole process.

Thanks for the advice 71.

A sealer, hummm that's what I feared and I don't suppose there's a way to tell?

I guess I'll have to experiment....

If you have a Tandy, I would call them. There has to be a solution (ie. chemical) to allow you to strip the sealer off so you can dye it.

This may sound stupid but you could try searching taxidermy suppliers. You may be able to find the materials you need.

Just a thought. Good luck.
