In 1978, Dave Prowse spoiled the Empire Strikes Back's ending to a local newspaper.

Well by his own admission (which came very late) he admitted he leaked info. A fact George Lucas knew all along, hence cutting him off.

I don't blame Prowse that Lucasfilm drew first blood by cutting him out of the promotional stuff in the early days (give or take 4 appearances) but if you bite the hand that feeds. Shame really becaause if he acted like Mayhew for example things may of been different.

The guy obviously has more brawn than brain, and absolutely no sense of tact or discretion. I knew the story about what happened but never saw an actual clipping of it....incredible...that he spilled it out even before filming of the Empire Strikes Back. What is even more surprising is that Prowse didn't learn one iota from that experience and complained about salaries for ROTJ and now cannot appear at LFL events. Ego destroys opportunity, it is that simple, and I have no sympathy for his present predicament.

Now, that being said, I still admire that he played Vader, my favorite villain. But the admiration stops beyond that role.

Thanks for sharing.

Same here. When I saw that, I about fell over backwards. Why would he do such a thing? I don't blame Luasfilm for doing what they did to him after pulling a stupid stunt like that. It goes to show you, NEVER tell Dave Prowse a secret.

..."stupid stunt"..????....are you sure you spelled that correctly? Prowse has, what we Scots call, "a magic heid".....he blew the ending of Empire, lied about doing all the saber work, moaned about salaries....

Man, you're in STAR WARS!!!!!...YOU'RE THE BIGGEST BADDIE IN THE UNIVERSE!!!!! Enjoy the ride!!!!!

...although, it's a bit too late now...

Wow, I was there that day in Berkeley with my brother! Even got my pic with him! Wow did Prowse blow it! Not so much to fans as to the newspaper!!! He was a very nice, friendly person though. Too bad it fell apart for him and LFL. Sad.

If you re-read it, you'll notice there are no quotation marks attributing
The info to David. He may have done his fair share of foot in mouth but this
Article predates the actual shooting and revalation writing.

Seems like supposition or hearsay. And in any case, there were scores of
Half-switched on people who guessed that was the way the story would go.
Yes, even in 1977!!!

You would think he was giving away state secrets or the recipe for KFC!

Now i have heard that he was stung by the media.

The paper had heard the leak about the ending of empire, which Dave says he knew nothing about. Then during an interview, the press tell Dave of the ending, and then get his reaction. When it comes to print they made out he offered the big reveal to the press, making him look like the bad guy.

So there are as always two sides to every story..... which one is the right one, who knows for sure?

I don't know about the in's and outs of this particular example but I've always been pretty cynical about what I read in the press: many years ago I was quoted in the national dailies regarding a friend of mine who'd been attacked in her house - I never spoke to anyone. I was about 14 at the time.

Also, in the 2004 DVD release it was made pretty clear that Dave Prowse didn't know and when he saw it at the screening it was the first time he learned how the dialogue really went and that Vader was Luke's father. I could remember it wrong. Been a while since I listened to the commentary on Empire or watched the extra features.

So maybe the journalist got a little creative and just grabbed a random rumor and went with it. It's been known to happen.
