After Star Wars, many of us who were kids at the time were hit with "Star Wars Fever." Until ESB came out, there was Battlestar Galactica rushing in to fill that void, helping us to dream again. I remember how they were photographed with a diamond lens filter while being polished to a gleam, and that fearsome and cool monotone "By your command."

When I was 12, I was at Universal Studios and I will never forget the tram ride. We were riding along when we rounded a corner, and two cylons in vehicle with a powerful laser cannon hijacked us and took us on board a Cylon ship. There, we were captured, and all the Cylons were animatropic -- except for one lone actor, a Colonial Warror who cried, "Release the humans!" And then there was the most spectacular laser beams, which was something like 1,600 or 6,000 impulses per second, spewing out a beam of solid light! The brave Colonial warrior risked his life, allowing us to escape.

I scored this off of eBay for about $90-something. Currently SgtFang has a kit for a bit more, having recently procured the molds. This particular kit was sold by someone who no longer had time to work on it, and he included some Bondo glazing putty, some DupliColor chrome spray paint, and some cement glue. It came with the electroncis for the eye.

Supposedly the kit was made by an eBay seller whose ID contained the word "starbuck". I contacted the Seller asking about the origins of this helmet but was unable to get a response. So who knows if this is a fan sculpt or somehow was descended from a screen-used prop.

These are the electronics.

Right out of the box, they didn't work. Two wires didn't seem to be connected, but I see no place where they might have been soldered. It's possible the battery is dead. There are five or so LEDs. The red plastic has many cylindrical hollows, so this should be interesting. If needed, I'm ready to replace them.

The kit appears to be vacuum formed plastic. I'm not up on my plastics, but I guess it may be ABS. The plastic is thin and somewhat flexible. There's not much in terms of detail. The essential shapes are there but I suppose it could still benefit from some sharpening up, though it's not vital.

The previous owner had already cemented the two halves together, but the halves of the kit -- when joined -- aren't seamless without some help. I will probably use Aquamend or some A+B type of expoxy.

The level of work is probably consistent with what Stormtrooper collectors have to go through when assembling their ABS or styrene helmets and costumes!

There are a lot of things that make me go, "Ergh." but I can easily fix them. The edges of the eyeslots and mouth are somewhat untidy with minor warpage. The skull surfaces also have some slight dips and so forth, but to paraphrase what JRX had said, sometimes the romance of a prop is with all these slight imperfections.

Here is the mouth piece.

I'm not too happy with this and may end up fabricating my own mouth. I see them as overlaping flat strips. I'm not certain I like this design. This was possibly hand-painted by the previous owner.

And here's the eyepiece.

It's of considerable weight but it appears to be cast in white resin. I don't like the surface condition, so I may end up sanding it. The eyeslot is going to need some help refining, as it's of inconsistent width.

All these photos were taken about 5-6 feet away.

I'm debating on whether to refine the detail. There aren't many hi-res photos of classic Cylons online. I suppose I could dig up my DVDs.

Cool helmet i seem to remember someone offering those kits on RPF a little while back $85 that was without the electronics and paint etc.
What paint is it you have i'm looking into doing one of these myself im just deciding on what kit to go for one of those or one of Sarges i also know someone else thats just done a sculpt and they are planning a display head on a motorised base with a motion sensor so when you walk past it or enter the room it will move and the led eye scroll will light up and it will say phrases from the movies.
Check this paint it's not cheap but the effect is superb from looking at the video on the site and no need for specialist equipment.
http://alsacorp.com/products/killercans/kc/killerchrome_prodinfo.htm watch the video
