Just passing the time looking again at castings and noticed this on the rear of the Paul Allen ESB stunt mask. The inset image of the mask shows the boxed area I've enlarged. If you look at the edge of the mask on the rear there appears to be a separation with two large layers, larger than paint. I'd like to confirm what this might be although obviously I have an idea...

Separation between the fiberglass layer and the top gelcoat/resin layer. At least that's how it looks to me, having worked with masks that separate similarly to that.

I don't think so, it is thicker I think than a gel coat layer...it is like a 50:50 split...and doesn't look like a separation but rather a layer...

Well... I can only state what I have experienced myself.

Seconded. It looks exactly like that to me.

Yes, agreed, it does look like de-lamination of some sort.

Or just a large air pocket cut in half while trimming off the excess 'glass from casting.

Most likely gel coat layer or air pocket as Kent suggested. The pics I took show bondo work on both inner and outer sides of the cast in that specific area on both sides (more the right side looking in) as well as where the top hat mount is so that is another possibility.

Oh really? Bondo work there? That's pretty interesting....but I wonder then why they would have done that....reinforcing?

If it is an airpocket, then it is a weak spot for an area that has to alleviate the stress from the dome when attached to the face.

Not neccesarily Carsten...but my personal opinion is that it is an air pocket.

Yeah, you've seen it in the flesh and you've handled it, so I'll bow to your opinion over speculation. :thumbsup

Well despite having seen it personally I must point out that I didnt put any thought into it at the time as I was photographing something else so any theory is as good as another for now. :)

I can tell you I'll have an exact answer sooner than later. :thumbsup
