I just thought I'd go back to this thread again t see if there was an more info.

Having looked at the photos a number of times since they were first posted I'm still of the view that this armour and helmet is just a standard set produced by AA in March 1976. Its clearly one of the first ones as has some of the tells of the sandtrooper (missing shoulder connectors etc.)

Given that male-female-male curve on the read of the helmet was so hard to get right, i'm guessing they just stuck something on to cover a mark, or crack

I agree Jez the helmet would have been vac formed by Ainsworth as he was the only person to have manufactured them. But I don't see how you can difinitively say that the suit is a standard Ainsworth as several suits were produced by Tashy Baines at Elstree before the same set of moulds were sent to Ainsworth. The suits would have therefore been exactly the same.

I see earcaps on that. I'm uncertain if I had read somewhere that Ainsworth claimed he came up with the earcaps. I suppose, if that was ever said, then such a statement would be inaccurate?

Interesting information Brian - so were Tashy's versions Fiberglass? Since I got the impression (perhaps incorrectly) that the team at Elstree were not capable of vac-forming to that standard at that time (or was it a capacity issue)?

Mac - Yes I understand Ainsworth added the ear caps to cover the gap/overlap caused by the vac-forming of 2 separate sections rather than a single piece (ie fiberglass). Brian agrees that the helmet is Ainsworth/Vac formed.

Cheers

Jez

Although Ainsworth led people to believe that he was the only one capable of vac forming, they had been vac forming in the studios for years before he ever started. His whole case was based on discrediting everyone elses ability.

Yes I remember you previously saying that they had a vac-forming machine but that it was out of commission (at least partly).

So it looks to me like they gave all the vac-formable helmet work to Ainsworth (or in fact Nick Pemberton) but then hit problems with their own vac-forming capabilities so decided it was quicker/easier to give the armor as well to Ainsworth.

Cheers

Jez
