I have to say though that I have seen several low numbered DPD's that do not look like this...although I agree they likely just slapped in whatever plaque was on top of the pile.

That being said I think its a stretch to dismiss this as a simple flaw in quality control...it is too much like the Rubies for that IMHO....unless we were to see more DPD's pop up like this anyway. Add that to the fact that the mesh is both different and glued in like a Rubies and the strap/clips are the Rubies versions. I doubt they would change those items anywhere in the run, especially since those items are commonly available.

Very strange indeed.

The depth of the chin triangle - is it possible it was not by design but by how thick the worker laid the fiberglass? As someone pointed earlier, one Deluxe helmet he owned differed in weight to another Deluxe in his collection.

Perhaps someone swapped out the mesh with that of a Rubie's? However, the white glue splotches and the mesh's perimeter seem consistent. The mesh does look to be of similar thickness to the DP, although I've honestly not looked at my DP's mesh for a very long time.

Is it possible that Rubies was sub-contracted out by DPS to make helmets? If the DP helmets listed above #s 188 and 189, are from the same mold and have not been modified, then why are the chin vents of different sizes? Wouldn't a standard chin vent size have been established on the master?

Looking at the differences in even the faceplates that don't look like a Rubies, I wouldn't say it was a simple flaw in quality control at all, but a huge phuck up. :violent

It would be good to see #188 and #189 side by side.
They are way different.

The mesh on #17 and #189 is a slightly larger pattern.
The foam in both is similar but not the same.
The resin sensors are a totally different shape.
Nosebridge wider on #17
And gunmetal paint on both are different as well.
The clip and straps on #17 is different to #189. The clip on #17 is similar to the rubies photo but not the same.

I'm glad you mentioned that Pete,

Mac, I can see different glass/resin thickness to a small extent, but the chinvent itself was likely molden in similar to how a helmet such as the SL is cast (already there but filled in with clay)...in this helmet the chinvent is a completely different and slightly smaller cutout....one that is consistently common with the Rubies.

The picture of the protoype seen in the SW fanclub magazine and #84 (I believe) seen on QVC at the time along with the one I owned which was #284 were all identical save for one thing, the tusks on the protoype showed remanants of the splines and had a chip missing....a problem later solved by adding nails to the casts.

Mike, its strange...almost like the top half of a DPD was fitted with the bottom half of a Rubies. Thats what comes to mind when I think of it.

p.s. Pete, I LOVE that avatar!

I think it is pretty obvious that the rubies mold has come from one of the early Dps. I would love to see a photo of another with a number under 20.
They must have improved the casts somewhere between 17 and 80.????

Its pretty hard to deny that this helmet pre-dates any rubies. The dome mount is identical to other Dps and has not been added. Don't know what else to tell you. It doesn't seem to fit in with current logical thinking but it wouldn't be the first time.
Love to see photos

Likewise its hard to ignore the obvious Rubies traits especially considering this would be the only DPD that looks like this including the first ones used for promo ads.

I dont have the answer...but I'd really like to see more shots if people have them. And I'll say it again, I'm not trying to rock the boat on this...but it does interest me enough to find out more.

Here are a few shots, my scanner isnt working ATM...

Would you believe I just found a photo of #18 on the net.
Here is a link to the page about 3/4 down the page

http://www.66batman.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/Y ... 1225350639

Note the thicker chin vent, Mesh is in the wrong way. Paint looks more matt and slightly darker just like #17.
Hard to tell the neck flare due to the foam on which it is sitting but I sent the guy an email asking if he had anymore photos

I'll be damned....The neck flair looks better (despite the angle of the shot) but yes the chin vent and mesh are the same.

Here is the #18 pic for the rest of you...
