What detailing?

I think most just presumed that either Liz or yourself did all the detailing.

Cheers

It has just come to my attention that Ainsworth took the credit for the detailing and design that was put on the helmets.

This again is an Ainsworth fabrication. It was done by the late Bob Walker (graphic designer) - I have recently worked with one of his sons who is a scenic artist and we've had some interesting discussions lately.

Is the late Bob Walker the man behind the design of the Imperial insignia cog?

WOW, cool. We had a discussion about that some time ago, but came up blank. Thanks for clearing that up. :thumbsup

Here's something I've been wondering:

On the shoulder bell, the raised mid-strip on especially the Hero armor, the strip is straight, then it swerves to one side near the bottom edge. How was it intended and done on the original sculpture - was it meant to swoop back, as seen on Mark Hamill's and Harrison Ford's right arm or meant to swoop forward as seen on their left?

To me it seems they wear the same bell on both left and right and not separate sculpts for left and right.

awesome info.
As for the insignia cog design: that discussion did not come up blank...John Mollo took credit for it. In fact, I had submitted that question to Star Wars Insider (and Steve Sansweet) and he answered it on page 57 of the January/ February 2008 issue.
His (Mollo's) response:
"The circular black and and white logo used on the Imperial helmets was designed by me, and was based on a series of sketches working out the possible use of shapes occurring in 18th century fortification. The Rebel logo...was again designed by me--no particular sources used this time."

Brian--do you have definitive information that disputes John Mollo's position?
Sorry for the OT.

The shoulder bells you see in those particular clips are all of the same bell, just worn on both sides as you suspected. There are two different bells as Brian will confirm. The funny thing is that if you look at Lukes' bells in the garbage masher, he is wearing a different bell (with no swoop) on his right arm, plus he has a different chest plate on which has a lot of 'flashing' left on the sides compared to the one he had on in those clips above.

It would have been a collaboration between the two of them but Bob Walker would have physically drawn it up and produced them.

Brian,

How sharply did you sculpt the armor details? Did you know beforehand that these would be duplicated through vacuum forming and that details might be softened depending on the thickness of the plastic material, so the sharpness of your sculpt was done accordingly?

Mac,

I did know beforehand that the suits were to be vac formed and from this point I made the details as sharp as possible. As with all the other characters I sharpened the detail again in the plaster stage.

So when you were sculpting the suit, was the Stormtrooper helmet already sculpted? If not, how did you know that the suit you were sculpting would work so well together with the helmet?

No the helmet was sculpted after the suit. I just created the kneckline of the suit that was in the McQuarrie painting. I don't know what Liz was given but she would have had some sort of guide to the neckline of the suit so that the helmet would marry in reasonably well.
