It's possible but unless Brian was sure there was that arrangement there's no evidence for that, at least from the screen mask as the only other holes on it would fit the roughly 1 inch long tabs. The tab holes clearly fit the tabs we are all familiar with and it is possible there was a separate connecting mechanism for the front/rear halves involving clips.

Anson posted this as fact:

The three clips on top of the mask were for connecting the back and front together and Velcro to be used for the neck area.

clips, not tabs....

Semantics Thomas.
Brian called them clips and I quoted him.
Nothing to pick up on.

Mac,

It certainly would have been suffocating to wear the complete mask. Dave's version of how the chin vent came about is inaccurate but I will be revealing the details in my forthcoming book

Brian

Please autograph #1 of the book for me, please!

BTW, do you need any Photoshop work for the book cover? :toothy

Then how were the front and rear halves attached? Mac showed tabs, not clips. So then there were three clips? All on the top?

Now I think you're trolling.
You've read my response and I'm not arguing with you.

I showed in a generic and oversimplified way that there are pieces (joiners / clips) that span the two halves, attaching to three tabs on each of the two halves. In theory, it would be a total of six tabs -- three on the front half, and three on the back half. The three joiners could have a total of six tabs themselves. I didn't draw these in.

I understand. And it's not trolling, I am curious what the actual configuration was....and what hardware was used, something I was curious if Brian was aware of if he saw the two halves together....

This thread sort of stopped dead :pale

Brian, if you don't mind me asking, I understand that you were supervised in your sculptural work primarily by the production designer, John Barry, and John Barry would have also supervised the costume designer, John Mollo. So John Mollo really didn't supervise your work since he was in a different department and you two were more like equals, is that correct? But you did work off of one of John Mollo's sketches, so he just provided the initial concept sketch for you to work off of?

Yes John Barry supervised my work with George Lucas also having a say.
John Barry did not necessarily supervise John Mollo, costume designer.
As costume designer John Mollo did not supervise me.
John Mollo's sketch of the mask and helmet was what I used as reference for Darth Vader.
I used Ralph McQuarrie's paintings for the body armour.

Brian, thanks for your input as always to clarify these matters. Some of us read all these things in many books or get info at conventions or word of mouth etc, etc and it is good to get the evidence of event's first hand.

I am not always the most complimentary of people but a big thank you. I think you have witnessed that some of us hardcore Vader fans are very annoying and anal in our own right in seeking the answers time and time again, so you must have lots of patience :hehe-err :cheers

Did you have a choice between McQuarrie's design and Mollo's design with helmet+mask and armor? If so, what made you chose one way versus the other?

Paul,

You're welcome. I give answers where I can from what happened at the time without speculation or supposition.

I didn't have any choice - I was given the McQuarrie paintings for the armour and I was asked to get the drawing from John Mollo in the wardrobe department.

Brian,

How close was your sculpture of vader compared with Mollo's drawings? Was the intial sculpture approved the first time around or did you need to make additional changes?

Thanks.

Brian,

Obviously you've seen the various casts of your sculpt that are floating about.
Could I ask if the scratches and nicks were present on the original sculpt or are they the product of the casting and painting?
I've always imagined the sculpt was very clean and smooth...

Anson
