Actually, I didn't mean to say javamonkey as an insult. There is another guy named javamonkey and I accidentally without realizing it misnamed you. Apologies for that.

One thing to keep in mind is that comparing clear coats used in the 70's to the urethane clears of today...as mac would say isn't an apples to apples comarison. Clear lacquer used in the 70's could be polished to produce a shine second to none...but it didn't last and required constant attention. Urethane clears today are far more user friendly.

What's your excuse for being an asshole?

Gino, we all got it that it was simply a misunderstanding, ok - :)

Now please listen to the mod (me) and let it rest ... it was a simple
misunderstanding and we'll leave it like that, ok, guys ... move along ...
... move along ...

I think removing the offending name and an apology is in order, so until then, not okay.

Please settle this via PM with Vadermonkey, as this does not belong in
this thread, and I said I don't want to see a fight about this here.

From Vadermonkeys point of view (in this MISUNDERSTANDING) you
insulted him first by screwing around with his user-name ... so he just
reacted to that ... even though unintended - you started this.
I'm sure as soon as Vadermonkey is back online he will apologize, but
now I ask you stop this, ok.

Take it with a little chuckle and try to be not offended for once.

Everybody got it was just a misunderstanding, ok - the staff will not allow
this to get "blown up" into anything else than that.

Move along ...

It's pretty insulting to ask someone to 'move along' while offensive names are allowed to be posted and not edited out.
As soon as I realized my mistake, I edited out the wrong name and apologized without being asked.
I'm sure it would be handled just the same if it were I who were doing the insulting. :rolleyes

You know, some people would try to insult be by saying "You can't even spell McLaren right." And then I have to point out that "MacLaren" is a historically accurate spelling, and that they probably got "McLaren" from the F1 racing car.

Just nobody try calling me "Mc." :toothy

Ok ... you just can't stop, can't you ...

1st - I as a mod CAN NOT EDIT POSTINGS !!! Only Admins can ...
You've been told that many times before.

2nd - I'm not insulting you - you'd know very clearly when I would ...
I'm only saying - wait until Vadermoinkey is back online to settle this
with you and move along ... that is no insult.

That's good - that's great, but Vadermonkey IS NOT ONLINE to read
and edit his posting ... as soon as he will be back and realizes that all
this was a misunderstanding, I'm sure he will apologize and edit his
posting just as you did.

In an exact case like this with a that clear misunderstanding, YES ...

Just one more thing - you are permanently insulting ME by ignoring what I
say as a MOD on these boards, and by constantly trying to pull me into
the mud whenever I try to step in to calm things down.

I ask you one last time to stop it now and wait for Vadermonkey to
contact you via PM ... stop trying to raise battles here.

END OF DISCUSSION.

Apology accepted, but it's still out there in the form of quotes. Both in JRX and CSMacLaren's posts.
Now if we can get those removed, we can get back on track.

GINO, it has been said before and even in this thread: TAKE IT TO PM! Contact an admin, get it fixed in private. I'm glad the misunderstanding was resolved, but doing it in public and ignoring a moderator telling you how things should be done will not be tolerated. Learn and abide by the rules, which you yourself have asked for, or don't come here any more.

Furthermore, I would kindly ask you to apologize to JRX for ignoring his staff decision and continue to argue this in the open. If that is not given then it will be considered as another insult to the staff and Jesper in particular and we cannot allow users to be disrespectful towards the staff here.

I hope I made myself clear.

I appreciate the admin editing my quote for me, because I didn't catch the pun until later. The quote was, again, not any intent of offense on my part, and I apologize if it was taken that way.

So let's get back on track. The question was if clear coating came about in the 80's or 90's. T-VIRUS posted an excellent article which shows that while automotive makers adopted it as a standard in the late 80's to 90's, the concept of clear coating goes as far back as the 50's and 60's.

What's interesting about this article is that it discusses how you can acheive a depth and gloss to the paint without adding huge thick layers of paint. When I first arrived at this community, the tutorials of the time and costumers on other forums were telling people to spray 4-6 coats of paint and then 2-3 layers of gloss coat. And we're not even counting how many layers of primer these tutorials and costumers were advocating.

When I look at the closeup Vadermonkey posted, I'm struck with how thin the paint was. The sharpness of the detail is still there despite the paint

After looking at vadermonkey's photo, I do wonder though if the gloss coat is actually the dull areas (that dulled over time) and that the gloss black is actually the underlying paint. Either way, there is a clear indication of paint, and I personally dont' think it's the gelcoat surface of the fiberglass.

I didn't think there was ever a debate about whether or not the surfaces were painted. Just whether or not a clear coat was used to which I emhpatically say it wasn't. Just gloss black paint.

Mac,
4-6 coats sounds thick, but in reality if it's sprayed evenly, with a good Paint Gun,
The final result once dried should still show all the detail excellent..
The only time you start to lose detail, is when the sprayer thinks he's putting
out a fire with the paint gun :) Leaving the finish thick and open for cracking...

also just an FYI. when a layer of paint is sprayed, it is a combination of
paint, thinner(reducer) and a hardner, so as the paint dries a lot of what you sprayed
evaporates and what your left with is usually a paper thin finish....

just to add my two cents to this post.. I also believe the paint to be
Enamel in ANH & ESB There are just too many signs of it to Me. besides
Base coat/clear coat was still relatively new and time comsuming to use
in and Industry where time is of the essence..
