Brian,

What about the space troopers and their double cannister oxygen tank backpack thingies? Did you sculpt those?

That's great info Brian...thank you :cheers

Did you use anything other than clay on the sculpts? Like found parts for the detailing in the box on the upper back, the abdomin section and the forearms?

Also, did you sculpt the hand plates and if so, how many versions?

The sandtroopers have at least two styles of hand plates and I've noticed the stormtroopers have at least two different styles too. Any ideas of why there was so many variations?

Finally, do you have any pictures of your sculpts of the trooper armour?

Thanks again for you input!

-Paul.

Hi Paul,

The box on the back was sculpted but the cog and I think the blocks were applied.
The forearms were totally sculpted and handed.
As far as I can remember the handplates were not sculpted and I don't know why there are different styles.
Sadly I do not have photos of me sculpting the Stormtrooper armour in clay.

Brian

Paul,

To answer your question on the now renamed AA trial thread -

I would like to say that I sculpted 12 indents on the right forearm and 11 indents on left forearm on the insistence of George Lucas but unfortunately I must have had a problem counting :lol But at least it proves that they were handed.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you but I've only just had time to check it out - well spotted!

Hi Brian, hope you enjoyed your break away :)

Very interesting reading and of course, unless the judge is a fool AA is a bit stuck, lol

Sorry for a slight digression here, but as for the spacetroopers we see outside the deathstar and then the sandtroopers, do you knwo who designed those particular stormtrooper apparatus? Any photos maybe? :)

There was a large vacuum forming machine at Elstree studios and it was operated by an old guy called Tashy Baines.

I saw full suits of Stormtrooper armour that had been pulled at Elstree studios. I have since had this corroborated by plasterers who worked on Star Wars at the time (they did not want to get involved in the court case and who can blame them?)

It was always a mystery to me why the moulds were sent off to Ainsworth for manufacturing the remainder of the suits. It was only listening to Pemberton in court that he revealed :dope that they had problems with the vacuum forming machine at Elstree. It then became clear to me :idea that that was why the moulds were sent off to Ainsworth.

Wow that's interesting, I'd heard that the studio had a vac form machine and always wondered why that meant AA made the troopers.

I assume Tashy vacced the Death Star interior wall pannels then? whoever did those did a heck of a lot of vaccing!

I don't know who designed those pariticular props.

The judge was very astute and very aware of the intricasies of the case.

Thanks again and no worries about the delay!

When you sculpted the main body armour, did you sculpt the knees, belt and canister or any of the other add on parts to complete the costume?

And did you intend for the abdomin to be seperate from the cod plate?

Same question for the lower back and butt plate too please :)

Thats really great info Brian - thanks.

I have a couple/three questions:

1) Do you know who exactly did the helmet detailing, was it the Art department or Mollo's Costuming team?.

2) Was there originally an intention to make the Stormtroopers out of Fiberglass, until the size of the undertaking forced a rethink. Or do you think it was always going to be vac-fomed?

3) Were any costume pieces (helmets etc.) made by the studio - or was it all farmed out to SDS. I'm thinking if they did all the sets like the Tantive then maybe they did some costume stuff too?

Cheers

Jez

Very interesting info. Brian.

When you say you sculpted the armour in individual sections does that mean you had to sculpt them on a number of different body castings or just one? Just curious as to what the process was.

Also, were there any prototypes done first to get an idea of how the armour would overlap etc. or did you just do one sculpt and then improve it after George Lucas had a look at it?

fantastic info! thanks Brian!

Brian did you have any imagery of the helmet to refer to when sculpting the armor? If Liz had been working for a month or so by then I assume she produced the clay sculpt in that period?

Also-do you have any photos of Liz Moore? either working in studio or any others? I'd love to put a face to the name!
